¡Ay, caramba! One of the tastiest openings of the year is Parnell’s Barulho.
Tucked away off of St Georges Bay Road, you’ll find the small but mighty little eatery. A peep into the cosy premise will find owners Sarah Ginella and Nico Mendez working away in the open kitchen cooking up an oh-so tasty storm. Inspired simply by a genuine love for food, Sarah’s dream has come true—owning a space where she can experiment, expand and explore her culinary genius.
“Barulho in Portuguese describes a lively, hyper, very happening atmosphere,” says Sarah. “By experimenting with exciting new flavours and creations, our food reflects that.”
With a menu that changes weekly, no visit to Barulho will ever be the same. Not to worry, because there’s nothing you’ll find on the European-Latin menu that doesn’t sound like the best meal ever. Almost impossible to choose from, it seems like there’s nothing the team haven’t already perfected.
With their breakfast selection on through till 12, you can even risk a cheeky sleep-in. Start your day with a spring in your step—the crispy poached egg, fresh chorizo, smokey beans and morcilla will give you just that! If, like us, you’re a chocoholic, you’ll want to check out their signature Spanish hot chocolate. The perfect winter warmer is a thick, warm and rich featuring hints of citrus and muy delicioso.
Our top pick from the all-day selection is the seductive hearty and damn tasty water chestnut lamb ragu gnocchi. Every comforting mouthful of house-made gnocchi is met with a contrasting crunch of enclosed chestnut that is so good you won't be able to stop. Topped with a spiced-to-absolute-perfection lamb ragu to die for, you’ll mentally be scheduling plans for round two.
If you’re after something a little more on the green lean and mean, the roast pumpkin, heirloom carrot with garbanzo purée, hazelnut picada and grilled flat bread won’t disappoint. You might even want to sweeten the deal with a house-made Alfajores biscuit on the side.
Just when you thought things couldn’t get any more awesome, Barulho has a fully house-made cabinet stocked to the brim with goodies galore. For those on the go, you’ll want to check out their daily Spanish pizza selections, chivito sandwiches and sweet treats the pan de ducche or cassata.
This Parnell addition is one that’ll have you back again and again. With its ever-changing menu, there’s no better reason to go back for more and experience the magic of Barulho.
