Just when you thought Ponsonby Central couldn't get any better, a brand spanking new eatery opens up—and boy oh boy, have we got a gem for you!
Brought to us by owners Mark Wallbank and chef Che Barrington (the minds behind top faves Woodpecker Hill, Chop Chop Noodle House, MooChowChow and, of course, the iconic The Blue Breeze Inn) comes Honeybear.
Introducing an exclusive Indian Burmese-infused menu nothing short of perfection to the Auckland foodie scene, the dynamic duo has done it again and brought us the foodgasmic eatery we’ve been waiting for.
Step inside the restaurant—or beehive as they call it—and you’ll be greeted by the cheery team and hip fit-out decked out with soft pink hues.
Throughout the menu, you’ll find more of the exclusively unique offerings of traditional dishes inspired with a touch of chef Che’s legendary sparkle. Their ‘shorties’ are the perfect option for those wanting to give a little bit of everything a try.
Our top pic? The insane panipuri—mini little parcels of puffed rice awesomeness, encasing green peas, almond and an out-of-this-world minted chutney. You’ll be hard pressed to find better out there, folks!
If you’re like us and are hopelessly devoted a cheeky fry or two, not to worry! Included under the shorties you’ll find Honeybear’s very own take on poutine. Featuring paneer curds, an indulgent gravy and sensationally golden crunchy fries, you won’t be able to keep your paws off of them!
Honeybear’s star of the show is the epic dosa. You’ll be served a giant pancake served alongside mint and coriander chutney with coconut and green chilli sambal. Designed to accompany any dish on the menu, don’t be afraid to roll up yo’ sleeves and scoop up the goodness of one of their epic mouth-watering curries.
Speaking of, the ‘biggies’ feature the winter warmer hot and smokey chicken curry with tones of ginger, cashew with a dash of yoghurt and sprinkle of curry leaf—it’s sure to put a spring in your step. Alternatively, opt for the 24-hour masala spiced beef, with cardamom, calamansi and tamarind chutney—it’s a total treat.
Of course, we didn’t forget dessert! Mark’s go-to is the seductive saffron semolina cake. Served alongside masala chai ice-cream and pomegranate pearls, we reckon he’s onto a winner!
And this all isn’t even to mention their extensive drinks list! For those who’ve ‘had a hard day driving around on their elephant’, Honeybear recommends stopping in for a drink or two to sit back relax, put up your paws and have a cold one.
Fit for royalty, each of their signature kombucha cocktails is inspired by Maharaja of the past. Each as unique as the rulers themselves, you’ll find offerings of blueberry with elderflower, mango with agave, plum with tamarind and feijoa with pandan, sweetened with a dash of honey, of course!
Our top pic is the Masala Colada, inspired by the Maharaja of Cooch Behar. Kicking your average piña colada to the kerb, this bad boy carries a fragrant spice, swaps out coconut cream for coconut water, and features Helsman rum, masala honey syrup and masala bitters. It’s sure to spice up your night.
Grab your sweet thang and experience a taste of Honeybear. This is one new opening you can’t bear (pun intended) to miss.
