Auckland’s getting a magical new garden bar, and folks, it’s set to be a game-changer. Say hello to Hoppers Garden Bar, an inner-city wonderland that will have the city lining up to fall down a rabbit hole.
Unrecognisable, the space which once housed Golden Dawn has been transformed into a visual feast of the bold and quirky. Away from the hustle and bustle of Ponsonby Road, a step inside will have you surrounded by a street spoilt with lush green paintings, teapots, bookcases and more! As you delve deeper down the rabbit hole, you’ll find yourself at the sprawling bar which features vintage brass taps and portraits of many colourful characters throughout, you won’t know where to look first!
The brainchild of dynamic duo Bronwyn and Jessica Payne, no detail has gone unnoticed with the sisters putting their signature flair on every nook and cranny.
“Hoppers was made for the adventurous, for those who enjoy trying new things, for someone who embraces creativity” says Jess.
And they’re not wrong! With a bar line-up crafted by award-winning mixologist Joel Bartosh, you can count on a stellar selection of cocktail creations that are sure to have you coming back for more. With a wicked selection of craft beers and Flight Coffee brewed espresso martini on tap, sip on the good stuff and relax to the soundtrack of regular live music.
But that’s not all! They even serve a range of tastetastic eats that taste as good as they look. A fusion of flavours of the world and designed to share, you’ll want to have your cameras at the ready for this line-up.
Our top pick is the juicy dumplings, available in prawn and ginger, prawn shaomai and shiitake mushroom. These parcels encasing happiness are sure to leave a smile on your face.
We pretty much lost all self-control when faced with the sticky pork ribs. Slow cooked in Chinese hoisin with fresh chilli and sesame slathered in a sweet, sticky sauce, good luck resisting the temptation for round two.
Our 5+ a day has never looked more appetising than the garden bowl. Jam-packed with raw vegetables, avocado, and nori served with satay and chill oil it’s a gram-worthy rainbow bowl of delicious.
We wouldn’t be The Urban List if we didn’t talk a’bao the epic bao bun line-up. From succulent soft-shell crab to twice-cooked pork belly, we warn you, these gems are highly addictive.
The tofu satay skewers are also a must. Doused in a mind-blowing Malaysian satay sauce, these bad boys are not one to miss.
It’s a big call, but Hoppers may even serve one of the best doughnuts in town. Meet the roti doughnut, a gift delivered to us straight from heaven itself. A scrumptious twist on a classic, think puffy flake pastry encasing doughnut texture topped with Kapiti Gingernut ice cream and oozing caramel sauce with a sprinkle of lemongrass sugar. Yes, it is THAT amazing.
An enchanted garden that’s you under its spell, stop everything and hop on down when doors open this Thursday and discover the magic for yourselves!
