Wynyard Quarter Is Now Home To Your New Favourite Restaurant

By Lauren Matilda Matthews - 05 Oct 2016

After the success of neighbouring Miss Clawdy’s, the Wiley boys have done it again, opening a beautiful new locale in bustling Wynyard Quarter, Kindred. The trio includes Father—long time restaurateur Dennis—and his two sons Tom and Jeff. This time they have included Dennis’ wife Belinda to create a space that echoes sentiments of family gatherings and shared values.

The eatery is simply beautiful. Light and airy it has licks of olive green and deep blush. The generous windows that adorn the frontage are ceiling high and open up completely—which no doubt will be a treat, come the warmer months.

The fare on offer is vast, but each dish is thoughtful, and almost makes us feel like we’ve been invited into someone’s home—‚someone that can cook incredibly well, that is. Open for all three meals, breakfast options are interesting takes on the classics—blueberry pancakes with banana, honeycomb and bacon butter. Make sure to slather it with the pure maple syrup that features alongside. The chorizo scramble is a friendly play on Spanish cuisine, sitting pretty next to smashed avocado and dressed with coriander and chilli all atop grilled sourdough.

When it comes to lunch, there’s something to satisfy everyone. The menu is broken up into lighter plates, mains and sides. We’d be tempted to dine with a group and order to take curated dishes from each section. Tuna poke is a Hawaiian classic, and here the fresh tuna is tossed gently with avocado, wakame seaweed and brown rice served alongside a chai cracker. The Vietnamese bone broth has incredible depth of flavour. Brimming with feel-good vegetables, it can be served with or without seared eye fillet. There’s tempura battered tarakehi, a grass-fed organic beef burger or scotch fillet all served with hand-cut fries.

For those wanting to make their way to the seaside location in the evening, the dinner menu is somewhat similar to the latter, with a few new dishes making an appearance. We highly suggest ordering the prawns to start as they are grilled to perfection and simply dressed with crispy capers and burnt butter. The hapuka is cooked to absolute perfection, it takes centre stage on the plate with cauli puree, braised fennel, peas, mint and fragrant salsa verde.

Now, a firm proposal: leave room for dessert. Kindred’s take on the humble pavlova is nothing short of phenomenal. The light pillow of meringue is adorned with lashing of cream, fresh passion fruit and stewed rhubarb and cacao nibs, and if sharing is your thing it’s suitable for two. Or, if you’re watching your waist we suggest feasting on the house made lemon and blueberry raw cashew cheesecake.

Kindred is certainly a welcome addition to Wynyard Quarter and the Wiley family have absolutely nailed this one on the head… Now, if this is how the family eats every meal.. We can’t help but wonder if they’d be keen to adopt any new members..?
