When three friends set themselves a mission to help build a platform for young Kiwi artists, they envisioned an art gallery. Pretty standard, really. What’s not so standard is the lively coffee and doughnut shop they integrated into their gallery—cue Olly.
Situated just outside of Mt Eden Village, this small shop is full of character. The back wall features a collaborative mural by three artists, while the other walls are adorned with their individual artworks which are (thankfully) available to purchase. These exhibitions will change out every month.
The trio of owners, Bryan Anderson, Alex Bartley Catt and Chloe Swarbrick (yes, that’s the same Chloe who was the youngest person to recently run for Auckland Mayor) are good friends and admittedly have become “better friends” since this operation begun.
“Art is something we’re all passionate about,” explains Bryan. “But we knew we needed more of a lure to get people into the gallery”.
And a ‘lure’ indeed is what they’ve set up indeed.
On offer are gorgeous and generous-sized doughnuts finished with a thick spread of icing— except the old-school sugar and cinnamon ones. There are so many flavours available, think matcha green tea, strawberry, cookies and cream chocolate and coconut, that trust us, it will be difficult to pick just one. Wash it all down with a perfectly extracted All Press brew or pour over, or try one of Green Leaf Organics’ refreshing concoctions.
There’s no doubt that you’ll be one happy chappy basking in all that culture upon your many visits to Olly. With a suitable sugar and caffeine fix at the ready, we for one, are envisioning we’ll be art connoisseurs faster than you can say ‘doughnut’.
