If you’ve visited Cali or Hawaii in recent times, you would have undoubtedly come across a poke bowl or two. Traditionally a fisherman’s snack, poke became a thing in the late 70’s, feeding surfers and other beach dwellers out of rickety food trucks with the white Hawaiian sands as their backdrop. And, for those of you that have visited Cali or Hawaii in recent times, would also have noticed that upon your return home, there’s no poke bowls in sight—until now that is!
Welcome to the streets of Auckland, Shaka Bowl. This cute little High Street setup is serving up poke and only poke—keep it simple, amiright? Yet, these bowls of goodness boast a flavour that’s far from simple. Choose the star of your bowl—fresh salmon, tuna or tofu that are all marinated in sesame oil and soy sauce among other things. Layer it with crisp veges— think edamame, spring onion, butter lettuce and cucumber and add a pop of sweetness with either pomegranate or mango (or both).
Each masterpiece comes complete with your choice of sauce. Sesame for those who love the rich nuttiness, and may be adverse to chili. Or, the wasabi mayo that also has extra kick thanks to the addition of garlic if that’s sounds more like you. If you’d like some extra bang for your buck we suggest choosing the fiery red sauce that’s a lethal combo of sriracha, wasabi and mayo.
The trio of owners are friendly and obviously buzzing about their new opening.
‘On a recent trip to the States we were obsessed—we tried poke whenever we came across it,’ they reveal. ‘Upon our return our craving didn’t go away, and after hunting for somewhere to get our fix we soon realised that poke wasn’t a thing here.’
So, naturally they made it a thing. At first, they tried their experimental creations on family and friends before testing out their product on punters at a few local markets. The feedback was nothing but positive and so, Shaka Bowl came to light.
The teeny tiny restaurant has only a handful of seats, but their poke bowls are made in front of your eyes in a matter of seconds. So we suggest picking a nice day to fuel up and take away your poke. Fresh, healthy, tasty, it wouldn’t actually bother us what the weather was like when choosing when to feast at this new opening. Seven days a week, lunch and dinner... Shut up, and take our money.
