Sometimes your taste buds need a bit of oomph in their lives. And when they do, there’s nothing like a vibrant, flavourful curry to do the job!
Tucking into Oh Calcutta’s tasty creations was how we recently spent our Thursday team lunch. The Parnell restaurant has been dishing authentic Indian nosh for 21 years, earning its rightful spot as one of the best Indian restaurants in Auckland.
Stepping into the restaurant is stepping out of Auckland. Oh Calcutta has the welcoming warmth you’d imagine an Indian home would exude—decked out with a traditional look and feel, which is sure to impress your client/parents/mates/boo.
The place attracts a steady stream of Aucklanders on the hunt for the perfect curry and Oh Calcutta’s offerings don’t disappoint. Executive chef Meena Anand works some serious magic in the kitchen, which you can see by peering through the huge glass window at the back of the restaurant.
We kicked off our Oh Calcutta journey by sampling their naan. Maybe not the way most Indian feasts start, especially since delicious treats such as onion bhajis, chilli prawns and tandoori chicken were on the menu, but our intern, Jaiden, had been raving about the chilli cheese naan for months, so we thought we best try it. Beautiful fresh bread with a hint of chilli and a touch of cheesy goodness, the naan went down a treat.
Curry was next. A light, citrus-heavy Prawn Malabari, lamb Punjabi Saag Ghost finished with pureed spinach, Oh Calcutta’s famous butter chicken, and vegetable korma curry, because y’know…vegetables. We mopped up the lot with paratha and more naan (it’s an addiction).
Each curry was in an elite league of its own, showcasing how versatile Indian cuisine can be. Oh, and because we’re champion eaters at The Urban List, we finished our meal by sampling the Tandoori Salmon Tikka, which got a unanimous tick of approval.
Whether you’re after a long leisurely lunch, a flavour-fuelled dinner or an excuse to stuff yourself silly with delicious Indian fare, Oh Calcutta is an oldie but a goodie.
