Can you keep a secret? Auckland has a new low-key chai lounge, right on K' Road!
That’s right, the legendary Satya have spread the love and opened up their second chai lounge. Perhaps K' Road’s new best-kept secret you’ll have to keep a keen eye out for this one. Fronting as a simple coffee, tea and chai shop, behind a false wall you’ll find yourself whisked away for a taste of the streets of India. Surrounded by cosy Persian rugs and dim intimate lighting, sit back, relax and experience a taste of the special something Satya has to offer.
For the owner, Sammy Akuthota, the culinary arts have always been a passion. Growing up in and around Satya, the family business, he soon found himself and following in their footsteps, building on his family’s dream. With meticulous taste and brilliant, even pallet, he’s worked long and hard to craft up a space to be proud of. This latest offering is a sister to the chai lounge in Sandringham.
‘As soon as you walk in through the door, I don’t want you to feel like you’re in New Zealand,’ says Sammy. ‘I wanted to create a space that reflects the food you’re tasting and actually makes you feel like you’re in its country of origin.’
With a menu featuring flavours so epic they’ll blow your socks off, we almost thought it was too good to be real. The lamb kofta is our top pick. Starring out-of-this world, 12/10 meatballs laced with spices so vibrant and provocative you won’t know what hit you. And it’s cooled off with an orange blossom-infused yoghurt—it’s an absolute winner in our books!
But that’s not all! The vegan-friendly dumplings are not to be underestimated. A dumpling, or as we like to call them, small parcels of foodgasmic awesomeness, are drenched in Sammy's secret spices and flavourings. You’ll be amazed at the culinary experience you just endured.
Of course, it wouldn’t be Indian street food without the classic lollipop chicken. Deep fried to perfection and doused with hits of green chili it will keep you on your toes and only leave you with a taste for more.
Also not to be missed is the Kurryaage Chicken. Get it? Curry and karaage! Think spicy, deep fried chicken karaage style with Sammy’s own signature special twist of black pepper and spices.
There’s no passing up the Chicken 65. Why 65 you ask? Rumour has it that long ago it was so flavoursome, people claimed it to be marinated in 65 different spices!
What’s a chai lounge without masala chai? Soak up the underground ambience sipping away on a fresh hot cup of awesomeness. Trust us, you’ll find it life chai-nging.
Teaming up with Garage Project they’ll have a whopping 18 beersies on offer, as well as a custom Chai Lounge exclusive brew, Death From Above. Featuring habanero chilies, you’ll find a fusion of American-style pale ale and South-East Asian flavours of mango, lime, Vietnamese mint and chili. All about the harmony, it’s our first choice for a cold one at the end of a long day.
Up for an adventure? Round up the gang and discover the magic of Satya Chai Lounge in K Road for yourself!
