If you’re confused between kimchi and kombucha and would just prefer a simple feed, then we’ve got your back. Sometimes there’s nothing better than scrambled eggs on toast, or meat and three veg (that someone else had cooked, thanks very much) but it’s getting harder and harder to find as Auckland ups it’s ante in the food scene.

And while we love all the innovative new openings and talent that’s putting the City of Sales on the international map, we thought it time to give the non-foodies a bit of love.

Here are 15 places to find good, honest, simple food.

Beretta Pizzeria

Takapuna

Sometimes the simple things in life, like a slab of pizza will do you good. Beretta Pizzeria, previously known as Blunderbuss in Takapuna, serves up some of the best pizza on the Shore—not to mention the delicious sangria on offer, too. Spend the arvo listening to music, sipping on sangria and enjoying a classic pizza.

Barilla Dumpling

Mt Eden

If you don’t care for fancy places and fancy dishes then you’ll absolutely love Barilla Dumpling. One of many dumpling spots on Dominion Road, it can be difficult to pick the best one—but guys, this is it!

Fatima’s

Ponsonby

You can never go wrong with Fatima’s totally non-fuss, Mediterranean style food. Our pick is the wrap with the fish-of-the-day. Of course, you can’t leave without eating some potato kofta’s too.

Bird On A Wire

Ponsonby Central & Takapuna

It can be difficult to get salad that’s not filled with solely super foods, all raw, and vegan. If you’re going to get a salad you at least want it to fill you up. Bird On A Wire hits the health spot with its fresh salad bar and the option of adding chicken or tofu to your dish.

The Shakespeare

Auckland City

We love a classic pub feed at times, and The Shakespeare in Auckland’s CBD prides itself on hearty pub food. The place is home to New Zealand’s first-ever brewery, and has been standing since 1898. Sink your teeth into some burgers, pizza and juicy steak.

Eden Noodles

Mt Eden

With a line out the door for miles, you can trust that the food is good. This Mt Eden joint takes away the stress of ordering, with only one flavour of dumplings—pork. You can’t go wrong with a noodle soup from Eden Noodles.

The Albion

Auckland City

Another long-standing English pub in central Auckland is The Albion, it’s one of New Zealand’s oldest standing hotels. If you’re a beer lover, you can scull back on big bottles of Lion Red and Waikato Draught. And, for the meat lovers, there’s no looking past the BBQ ribs on offer by the half or full kilo. Slow-cooked over three hours and soaked in a Jack Daniels sauce, you’ll be in rib heaven.

Epolito’s Pizzeria

Grey Lynn

Epolito’s Pizzeria in Grey Lynn is known for its New York style pizzas, not short on size, the hand-stretched pizzas are so big you have to fold them to eat them. Well that’s how we like to eat ‘em. Nothing’s fancy about it, it’s just you and your pizza having a great time.

Northcote Tavern

Northcote

North Shore residents rejoice, the Northcote Tavern will fill your tum with scrumptious food. A classic pub, from the old fireplace through to the tartan carpet and pokie machines, you’ll feel as though you’ve been thrown into a time machine and taken back to the 1800’s. No need to stress over what certain dishes are, with staple menu items including big breakfasts, apple tarts, lamb shanks, spaghetti and our favourite—a steak and Guinness pie.

Mt Eden Village Fish Shop

Mt Eden

Nothing compares to good ol’ fish and chips on the beach with the fam. While there are plenty of options around all the neighbourhoods to find your fave, we’ve got a special spot in our hearts (or tummies) for the Mt Eden Village Fish Shop. Priding itself on the freshest fish, you get to pick your filet and have the staff season it and cook it as you wish. There’s also smoked fish pies for those inclined to branch out.

Thai Street

Wynyard Quarter

No doubt non-foodies are fans of the classic Thai dishes, we’re talking about pad Thai, green Thai curry and of course chicken satay skewers. For an authentic Thai cuisine no-frills experience, visit Thai Street in Wynyard Quarter. The Urban List Team is guilty of claiming this place to have the best green curry in AKL.

Swashbucklers

Westhaven

If you’ve come straight off a day on the water, or you’ve been hanging around Westhaven Marina, Swashbucklers is the perfect place to pop yourself down—the views and the food are something worth raving about. Specialising in seafood, choose from shrimp cocktails, scallop dishes, buckets of mussels, whitebait fritters and fresh fish. If seafood isn’t quite your thing, they also offer steak, pasta and chicken.

Deep Creek Brewing

Browns Bay

Brews and BBQ’s sums up Deep Creek Brewing in Browns Bay, go for a drink, stay for a feed. Enjoy tasting platters, small bites, big bites, or tacos. We think the rack of lamb, pork belly and mac and cheese balls are a must-try.

The Lumsden Freehouse

Newmarket

Craft beer and pub food basically go hand in hand, and The Lumsden Freehouse has hit the nail on the head with both. It offers more than 120 craft beers, 15 taps and food to pair. From the famous buffalo chicken wings through to totally insane wings, it’s a given that you’ll be ordering the wings. If that didn’t tempt you, there is also a pulled pork burger, bacon and sour cream wedges, and country-fried chicken & waffles.

The Occidental

Auckland CIty

A Belgian Beer Café at its finest, The Occidental is situated down Vulcan Lane in Auckland’s CBD. If you want to take all the fuss out of eating, try the Belgian Taster Tray, with six beers with matching food—think, calamari, chicken wings, pork sausage, pork slider, prawn bruschetta and grilled mussels.
