The Best DIY Smoothies To Kick Start Your Morning

Morning person or not, there is one thing that will no doubt get us all out of bed—finger lickin’ good food. For many of us, this means heading out for brunch. But for other, slightly more astute individuals, brunch is brought to their very own kitchen, every single morning.

We thought it was time to jump on the bandwagon and get our early-morning MasterChef on, starting with a good ol’ smoothie. These five recipes are fast, healthy and damn delicious, leaving little excuse to not partake in the challenge! Watch out, we’re about to make that hidden blender your new best friend.

Choc Peanut Butter Shake

Chocolate, peanut butter and banana go together like Bert and Ernie—great on their own but unbeatable together. This shake is dedicated to those with a sweet tooth and perfect for those who need a sugar kick to get going. Drinking this bad boy in the morning will allow you to power through the day, right on past that morning tea muffin basket! With just five simple ingredients you’ll (hopefully) have lying around in the pantry, this is our favourite natural energy hit. Thanks to the dates, this shake promotes clear skin and is loaded with B vitamins. The peanut butter provides a slow release of energy keeping us fuller for longer while the cacao powder is packed with magnesium-rich antioxidants that prevent ageing (yipeee!).

Ingredients:

  • 1 large frozen banana
  • 2 tbsp natural peanut butter
  • 1-2 medjool dates, pitted (pro tip: if they’re not sticky, soak them in water for 10 minutes)
  • 1 1/4 cups almond milk, unsweetened
  • 1 tbsp cacao powder, or unsweetened cocoa powder

Method:

  • Chuck everything in the blender and whiz it on up! It’s as easy as that.
  • Taste test after the first blend and adjust ingredients depending on the desired sweetness. But if you ask us, the sweeter the better, which means popping a few extra juicy dates in or an extra dollop of peanut butter.

The Green Machine

Consuming your very first green smoothie is a daunting task. We’ve all ordered one in the quest of being a little healthier and found ourselves spitting it out after the first mouthful. This is why making your own is the perfect solution. If you drank this one blindfolded you’d have no idea there was spinach in it—trust us, it’s that good. Using New Zealand’s own kiwifruit to provide the sweetness, we only use half a banana to cut the carbs while using greek yoghurt to pack in the protein. AKA, sustained energy! For those looking to up their vege intake and start the day with a ‘clean-green’ approach, this is your saviour.

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 a large banana
  • 2 kiwifruits, peeled and chopped
  • 1 cup baby spinach or kale
  • 1/2 cup natural greek yoghurt
  • 2 tbsp ground flax seeds or chia seeds
  • 1/2 cup apple juice
  • handful of ice cubes

Method:

  • Once again, chuck everything into the blender and whiz it all up. This is a great one to eat with a spoon so pop it in a bowl and top it with your favourite granola for a little extra crunch and sweetness.

Maca Berry Smoothie Bowl

Our personal favourite, the maca berry smoothie bowl is ideal smoothie to regain your morning mojo! Using frozen bananas and mixed berries to get that creamy texture, the base alone is delicious. But when we add maca powder, maple syrup and coconut into the mix, it’s a literal party for your tastebuds. Maca root is a women’s best friend. It balances hormones, increases energy and is rich in nutrients. Difficult to believe, but maca has a higher calcium content than milk does! Meaning for those on the non-dairy bandwagon, this may just be the health product you need. Finish the recipe with a serving of your favourite protein powder to make this recipe perfectly balanced and fit for a morning of getting s*** done!

Ingredients:

  • 1 - 2 bananas, frozen
  • 1/2 cup frozen mixed berries
  • 1 heaped tsp maca powder
  • 1 tablespoon natural maple syrup, or manuka honey
  • 1 serving chocolate protein powder, optional
  • 3/4 cup coconut water
  • Sprinkling of your favourite nutty granola

Method:

  • In a powerful blender combine all ingredients besides maple syrup and whiz until well combined.
  • Pour into a bowl, swirl through the maple syrup and garnish with granola. This is that insta-worthy smoothie bowl you’ve been waiting for… So get snapping.
  • Note that the consistency is much thicker than an ordinary smoothie, it should resemble ‘ice cream’. If your blender is struggling, simply add more liquid.

Salted Caramel Coffee Shake

You may not be dreaming anymore, but it’ll sure taste like you are! This Salted Caramel Coffee shake is a sure-fire family favourite, perfect for you and your beau. Your man will have no idea this is good for him, so keep the recipe on the d-low and get blending. The combination of dates and himalayan sea salt provide the caramel sensation, while the spoonful of instant coffee will have you eager to start ticking off that to-do list! We’ve got those B vitamins with the dates and your daily dose of antioxidants thanks to that scrumptious cacao powder. As usual, there’s banana loaded in here to get the texture on lock, and a spice of vanilla to perfect that flavour.

Ingredients:

  • 1 banana, frozen
  • 1/2 cup plunger coffee, brewed and left to sit until cool
  • 1 tbsp cacao powder
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 3-4 medjool dates, pitted (pro tip: if they’re not sticky, soak them in water for 10 minutes)
  • pinch of himalayan sea salt
  • 1 serving chocolate protein powder, optional
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened almond milk
  • handful of ice cubes

Method:

  • Add all ingredients into the blender and whiz until silky smooth. Adjust liquid depending on desired consistency. Consume immediately!

Coconut Mango Smoothie Bowl

This list wouldn’t be complete without a taste of the tropics. What makes a great holiday in the sun is fresh fruity drinks, preferably alcoholic… But since we’re talking breakfast, we ditch the liquor for coconut milk and overload on all that fruity goodness leaving us with the perfect summery smoothie. This recipe favours mango, but you can switch it up for pineapple, peach or papaya depending on your taste palette. Mango however, is packed with benefits ranging from aiding in digestion to promoting glowing skin and hair. Using coconut milk keeps this one dairy-free and adds a ton of flavour. Especially when combined with the coconut yoghurt which gives us our protein, we’ve got one nutrient loaded smoothie that tastes heavenly! A seasonal smoothie but nonetheless, a must try!

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup mango, cubed and peeled (frozen works too)
  • 1 banana, frozen
  • 3/4 cup coconut milk, unsweetened
  • 1 tsp manuka honey
  • 1 heaped tsp chia seed
  • 1 tbsp coconut yoghurt
  • 1/4 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tbsp shredded coconut

Method:

  • Combine all ingredients into the blender besides the shredded coconut and blend until smooth.
  • Pour into a bowl and garnish with the desiccated coconut.
