2017 was the year of restaurants. With fabulous new additions popping up what felt like almost daily, there's no doubt the Auckland foodie scene has skyrocketed this year. From cuisines around the world to Kiwi classics, we’ve been spoilt rotten—not that we’re complaining! No need to fret, if you haven’t come across these gems in your travels, they’re here for both a good time and a long time. With new opening after new opening, it’s almost impossible to keep up! Thanks to our never-ending appetite, we’ve tried and tested them all, so sit back and relax as we proudly present the new culinary experiences you need to hit this summer.
Since swerving onto the scene, 1947 has re-invented Auckland’s Indian cuisine. Taking diners to the bustling streets of India, you’ll be greeted by a rickshaw, and swept off your feet after a taste of the extensive menu. Bringing beloved classics from across India to your table, you don't want the miss the extremely addictive paav bajhi or moreish wannabe drumsticks. You won’t regret giving the chef's special lamb shank nihaari a try or opt for the mouth-watering malai chicken. Serving up the whacky ‘cold blood’ dry ice cocktail, you can count on more than one masterpiece coming from the sprawling bar.
The Good Home
While technically a gastropub, The Good Home Onehunga as fast become a beloved hub for locals. Found in the newly restored Andrew Carnegie Free Library, there’s no missing this bad boy. A quick peep inside will have you instantly falling head over heels—from the bar fitted out as an ode the original library to the hip sleek atrium, this gem will no doubt be a summer fave. With a menu featuring the juicy rib eye steak, Jerusalem harvest veggies, and miso glazed hapuka, it’s no wonder it’s got the punters raving. With locations in Mt Eden, Birkenhead, Stanmore Bay, Takanini and now Lincoln Road the love has spread far and wide.
Boy oh boy, where do we start? Step inside and you’ll quickly find yourself whisked away to a scene straight out of Turkey, warmed by turquoise stones, hand-painted murals, banquet seating and copper cutlery. Found on the foodtastic Jellicoe St, it boasts breakfast, lunch and dinner menus that’ll have you weak at the knees. Feriza’s has fast become a favourite with the local crowd. With slovaki that’ll have you quickly planning round two, superb platters, ‘gram worthy desserts and innovative cocktails, this is one Auckland restaurant to put on your bucket list.
When we caught wind Auckland was getting an eatery entirely dedicated to fried chicken and beer, we knew this was going to be big—and we were NOT disappointed. Found on the main Kingsland strand, it’s love at first bite at Chicka. The simple yet very effective menu boasts seven Korean and three Thai fried chicken options. As if that wasn’t perfect enough, they also serve corn cheesy, a fabulous concoction that when wrapped (yes wrapped) around fried chicken will have you in foodie heaven.
From celeb chef Simon Gault, it’s no wonder Giraffe was a stand out fave. Named by his three-year-old daughter (awww!), you’ll find this new classic in the heart of the Viaduct. The menu pays particular detail to feature locally sourced ingredients resulting in a moreish modern Kiwi offering for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Our top picks include the moreish “crackers’ of beef tenderloins, which are dehydrated until crispy, the kahawai butter and the divine eye fillet. Don’t forget to save room for dessert, the decadent chocolate fondant is legendary.
Satya Chai Lounge
Perhaps Auckland’s most secretive new opening, you’ll find Satya Chai Lounge on K’ Road. Beyond the simple front lies an intimate setting decked out in Persian rugs and mood lighting. Jam-packed with flavour, the menu is designed to share, don’t miss the lamb kofta meatballs, vegan-friendly dumplings, and fiery chicken 65. Pro tip: pair with a masala chai for a truly authentic experience. Perfect for groups, your squad will be thanking you for discovering this hotspot.
