Auckland’s restaurants, cafes and bars will always have a special snuggly place in our hearts, but there’s one foodie category that we just can’t get enough of: street food. The food stalls, trucks and pop-ups that set up camp in various spots of the city and dish out fuss-free yet damn delicious dishes to the masses.
Working in the street food scene isn’t a walk in the park. It requires hard yakka, the ability to adapt, innovate and evolve, and a knack for leaving customers wanting more. After all, there’s a reason why people follow their favourite food truck around town. They’re the pied pipers of the food world and deserve recognition. That’s where the Lewisham Foundation Awards come in. The hospitality industry awards celebrate all things good in Auckland’s dining scene.
To be up for the outstanding street food award, they must be creative in their approach and consistent in the delivery of food. The best thing about it? This is the first time the outstanding street food category has been in the awards, so we’re eager to see who takes it out.
The 2016 nominees are in and we’re stoked to see some of our faves in the running. Here’s why we love these four street food vendors.
Dixie Barbecue is one of the head honchos of Auckland’s meat scene and has built a name for itself as the go-to for barbecue on wheels. When it comes to tasty, authentic, low ‘n’ slow food, they fit the bill perfectly. Heck, they even covered over 12,000km of the US of A’s barbecue belt to learn the tricks of the trade. From pulled pork sammies to trays of finger-lickin’ brisket, short rib, hushpuppies and slaw, there’s a reason why these guys are in the running. Check out their directory listing here.
Team Judge Bao aka Debbie and Jamie have played a huge role in cementing Auckland’s obsession with bao (steamed buns). Not only that, Judge Bao are—hands down—one of the most innovative food stalls in Auckland, collaborating with other fellow food stallers, creating clever pop-ups and always pushing the bao boundaries. And that’s why we love ‘em. Read up on Judge Bao here.
The Lucky Taco
Tacos and food trucks weren’t really a thing in Auckland until The Lucky Taco rolled into town. Husband-wife duo Otis and Sarah Frizzell ate their way through The States before coming back to set up their taco empire. Their tacos are packed full of flavour and feature the likes of spicy fish, marinated steak, pulled pork and beef tongue. Giving them even more brownie (or should we say ‘taco’?) points, The Lucky Taco released taco kits into Farro Fresh and Nosh Food Market this year! For more deets, head to their directory listing.
The Roaming Dive
Taking inspiration from ‘50s American dives, The Roaming Dive is a food truck that specialises in all things naughty and delish. We’re talking loaded fries, sliders, po’boys and chicken waffles. If that wasn’t enough, The Roaming Dive created the revolutionary concept of a DIY Dive Slider Station. They’ll rock up to your event with a box of buns, meat, salads and condiments for you and your guests to get stuck into. Genius. Find out more here.
