Restaurants come and restaurants go, but for the last 18 years O’Connell St Bistro has been doing its thing, keeping both the suits and the foodies happy. But old doesn’t mean boring—there’s been a fair bit going on at this iconic Auckland restaurant and we figured it was time to go back for a meal—and it was well worth it.
Firstly, O’Connell St itself has had a refurb and might we say, it scrubs up well. Bright, airy and clean it’s a like a whole new street. Embracing the change, O’Connell St Bistro has thrown open its doors and now offers a new outdoor dining area for up to 20 people. It’s a perfect spot for soaking the evening rays.
But not only has O’Connell St Bistro extended its seating, it’s menu has been revamped too. They’ve brought in head chef Mark Southon (French Café and Foodstore among others), who’s created an abundance of new delicious dishes—but don’t worry, those ol’ favs are still on the menu.
The eye fillet beef, mustard spaetzle, shiitake mushrooms, pancetta, onion puree and bone marrow thyme crumb is out of this world. For dessert, don’t miss the white chocolate mousse, orange jelly, fennel sorbet and caramelised brioche for an explosion of flavour your palette will love.
In a break from tradition, owner Chris Upton has embraced the plate sharing trend and the Bistro now offers a new grazing menu in the afternoons—think oysters, crispy fried squid with daikon slaw and saffron aioli or hand cut agria chips. Drooling yet?
Your venue is sorted, your meal is sorted, now what about those drinks? O’Connell St Bistro is the perfect restaurant to up your classy ante and buy a glass of Cristal champers (one of the few places in the country you can do so) or choose from their award-winning wine list.
One of the best restaurants in Auckland, O’Connell St Bistro has served Prime Ministers and European Royalty and with its new menu, new chef and new seating it’s time to get there, stat.
