Fish and chips: the nation’s official dish. We love ‘em on the beach, as a picnic in the park and in front of the telly on Friday Takeaway Night. Nothing compares to the savoury, salty goodness—nothing. So much so, that when we head along to fancy restaurants, we just want a plate of fish and chips! Thankfully, some of the city’s finest eateries are satisfying the craving in exceptional style. Here are the ten best places to get fancy schmancy fish and chips in Auckland.
When it comes to wining and dining, Cibo don’t do things by halves—and their fish and chips is no exception. The ever-so-fresh fish is battered to perfection before being served with sauce gribiche (a French mayonnaise-esque number). Finish things off with Cibo’s signature pavlova (choose between salted caramel or tropical fruits) to have a Kiwi meal to remember!
Devon On The Wharf
When you find yourself dining near—or ON—the ocean, it seems appropriate to order fish. Located on the Devonport wharf, the aptly named restaurant Devon On The Wharf do an exceptional F&C number. Enjoy their battered fish on a serve of shoestring fries alongside a fresh green salad. We love their tartare sauce made with sujuk—a spicy Middle Eastern sausage.
Oh, Kindred. We swear you can do no wrong and your tarakihi is no different. Located on Wynyard Quarter, the eatery is a hop, step and a jump from the ocean, which is perhaps why their fish is so damn fresh. The tarakihi is tempura-battered and served with chunky hand-cut fries. The dish comes with the all-important tartare dipping sauce and wedge of lemon—yum!
Takapuna Beach Café
You can’t call yourself a beach café without having an epic fish and chip offering—it’s like an unwritten rule. Takapuna Beach Café tick all the boxes with their classic Kiwi dish. Think battered market fish served with crunchy-on-the-outside-fluffy-on-the-inside fries! Our advice? Save room for dessert because their gelato is not to be missed (the chocolate honeycomb is an Urban List fave!).
St Heliers Bay Café & Bistro
When it comes to all things delish, St Heliers Bay Café & Bistro know how to whip up the goods. Their classic fish and chips will satisfy that salty, savoury craving without the unwanted grease—they even throw in some greens. Pro tip: ask for a side of their smoked garlic aioli. Finish off with a scoop or two of their handmade ice cream and call it a day.
Takapuna and Ponsonby
With a name like Fish Fish, it’s no surprise this eatery is bawse at all things fish. You can have your fish three ways here: beer battered with Sawmill Pilsner, panko-crumbed or pan-fried. As for the chips, choose between chunky potato or golden kumara. We’re particularly fond of the latter because of the lemon mayonnaise they come with—yass please! We also rate Fish Fish’s kingfish ceviche, fish tacos and—of course—their chip butty.
Habourside Ocean Bar Grill
Take in views of the spectacular Waitemata Harbour as you devour Harbourside’s exceptional fush n chups. Their signature dish stars tarakihi fillets, hand-cut chippies and mushy peas. They also throw in a lemon wedge and tartare sauce for good measure. If you love all things from the sea, their sashimi is insane (the good kind).
Soul Bar & Bistro
Perched on The Viaduct, Soul Bar & Bistro have taken the classic fish and chips and made it their own. Here you’ll be served beer-battered tarakihi served with a Persian-style Russian potato salad with dill. Fries can take a hike because potato just got fan-caaay! Rest assured, you can get skinny fries if that’s what your heart ultimately desires.
Fish and chips is as much of a British classic as it is a Kiwi one. At Sandringham newcomer Lord Kitchener, you’ll discover the likes of Yorkshire puds, bubble and squeak and chip butties. Their beer-battered fish is infused with malt vinegar (it’s a British thang) and served with fries, greens and mushy peas. Wash down with a pint and call yourself a true Brit.
Jack Tar has got a rep for the biggest of big meals and their fish and chips is hella mighty. Work your way through beer-battered fillets, chunky and oh-so crispy fries as well as a sizeable garden salad. If you don’t think you can tackle this beast, you can order a half portion of the dish.
