Lounging around the house is great and all, but with all the fantastic events on offer this week, there’s absolutely no excuse to stay home. You don’t want to miss out on all the fun, do you? Venture out that front door and explore all the exciting activities on offer. Check out funky pieces at a St Kevin’s Arcade art exhibit, learn to cook Indonesian, celebrate Chinese New Year at the Lantern Festival, celebrate Pride or get artistic with the help of bubbly. That’s right, this week’s promising to be one fun ride of awesome activities, one after the other.
Monday 11 February
Take a stroll down K' Rd and pop into St Kevin’s Arcade to check out Uncurated—an exhibit housing the work of 27 Auckland creatives. The artworks have very little in common and are basically a mix of fun, eclectic sculptures, ceramics, illustrations and textiles that you wouldn’t expect to see together. The artists, however, do have something in common with each other—they all work in galleries, displaying the work of other people, daily. Uncurated, is their chance to step into the limelight for once and play the artist, rather than the curator.
Tuesday 12 February
Indonesian street food is full of spice, strong on flavour and basically freaking delicious. So, why not learn to cook it yourself? Auckland Seafood School is holding an Indonesian cuisine class, teaching the secrets to two amazing meals. Learn to whip up Indonesian fried fish with sweet chilli noodles and grilled fish with sambal matah, melon and cucumber salad. With all the tips and tricks revealed on the night, your next dinner party will be a hit.
Wednesday 13 February
Veuve Clicquot Colourama Series
There’s an artist living inside us all, and what better way to bring them out than a glass of bubbly? Madame Clicquot is pairing up with up-and-coming New Zealand artist Holly Schroder, inviting you to the ultimate art class, complete with canapes and drinks. Create your own masterpiece under Holly’s guidance, who will be sharing her artistic secrets through the night. Learn about her painting technique, use of colour and the concept of pareidolia. Down some champers, equip yourself with a brush and let lose unto a canvas.
Thursday 14 February
Boy Erased Premier
Boy Erased is a movie we’ve long anticipated and, it’s finally here. EVENT Cinemas Newmarket is hosting the New Zealand premier and you’re invited. The film tells the true story of a young gay man who is forced to attend a conversion therapy program after he is outed to his small-town, religious family. Highly controversial, the film features heart-wrenching performances from Nicole Kidman, Russel Crowe and Lucas Hedges.
The Year of the Pig is approaching and what better way to celebrate than The Lantern Festival? Chinese New Year is a big deal and if you want a good year ahead, you better start it off with a bang. Come along to the Domain and feast your eyes upon beautiful lanterns glowing against the evening darkness. Enjoy cultural performances of dance, music and martial arts, shop Chinese crafts and fill your belly with Chinese cuisine.
