Aucklanders, get those stretchy pants at the ready because do we have news for you. Next month, you’ll have the chance to eat your way around the world….in the ‘burb of Mt Roskill.
Yes, we know that travel is quintessential for finding yourself, making new friends and all that jazz. But we all know that you travel for the food—and so do we.
And now, there’s absolutely no reason to fork out thousands of dollars for a big OE just to try the exotic and delicious tastes because a new festival is hitting the City of Sails and it’s your chance to (literally) eat your way around the world. You’ll also have the chance to soak in some of the epic cultures that make our city as great as it is.
This is a rare opportunity to try foods that you’ve never even heard of before. Celebrating more than 56 cultures, you know you’re onto a good thing. Vegetarians and vegans, don’t worry, because they’ve got you covered, with vendors locked in so that you can enjoy this glorious day as well—no one left behind.
For a full sensory journey around the world, sample South East Mediterranean Nomadic cuisine, Hungarian goulash, Malaysian street food, Chilean delights, Ethiopian coffee, French crepes and traditional Indian yoghurt drinks.
For the feisty flavours of Spain, visit the stalls of Sabores, Toro Churro and Paella Pan among others. And take your tastebuds to Japan for the fresh, piquant subtlety of Japanese seafood from Ginza Takoyaki and Osaka Soul.
As well as being a foodie’s dream, the day also features captivating cultural performances and activities. See and hear a beautiful collision of Māori and Pacific cultures in segments from Sharu Delilken’sDominion Road Musical and witness another profound tapestry of intercultural music from Ethno New Zealand whose young artists bring traditional music alive.
Asia brings back the ever-popular Mr. Mask, a traditional Chinese face-changing opera, and the astonishing Tamashii Taiko Drummers.
Of course, no festival would be complete without workshops, arts and craft stalls and games—and the Auckland International Cultural Festival has them in abundance.
This is one family-friendly festival that should be on your calendar—with food, music, performances, stalls, games and more, it promises to be a day out to remember. Even better? It’s free.
