Freut euch!! (Be Excited) Brotzeit Cafe & Bakery has officially opened the doors to its new Ponsonby digs and we couldn’t be more thrilled!

Having moved to New Zealand four years ago with her husband and three kids, owner Daniela van der Scheer found herself longing for the authentic German bread from home. This led her to set up the very first Brotziet bakery in Albany. The new Ponsonby location expands her true German-style bakery dream into a cafe as well as bakery.

So what is it exactly that makes German-style baking just so darn irresistible?

“The bread here is quite light and airy,” Daniela say. “German bread is more solid, filling and satisfying—a little goes a long way”.

Just follow the sweet sweet scent of fresh pretzel and you’ll find yourself in a carbilicious wonderland—you won’t know what to do with yourself! Luckily, Daniela and the team are on hand with recommendations. Her top pick is the volkornbrot, a moist, flavoursome, whole grain dark rye packed with sunflower seeds. Our favourite would have be the grain edge, this triangular masterpiece is the secret ingredient to all good sammies.

Can’t commit to a loaf? With all sorts of  fresh rolls, from sourdough Tuscan to carrot, we’d recommend doing a mix n’ match!

But onto what you really came here for—the stunning bretzel (pretzel). These bronzed gems are the real deal—baked Swabian-style and sprinkled with salt. It’ll be like your first time all over again. Or, opt for a majestic lye crown, six rolls baked against each other to perfection—your lunch will rule all!

On the run? Check out their selection of freshly made rolls, each filled to the brim with delectables. There’s even something for those with a sweet tooth! We’re big fans of the Berliner, a German doughnut filled to the brim with a burst of fruit jelly, smothered in powdered sugar. Or, if you’re really feeling like something new, the currant crumble cake, a delectable yeast pastry covered in crumbles, red currents decorated with fudge, this lecker (yum) treat will soon be a regular stop on your morning commute. Pair with an All Press coffee and you’ll be one happy Aucklander.

Sound good? Get down to Brotzeit Cafe & Bakery and experience a little slice of Germany, right here in Auckland. Genieße es! (Enjoy it!)
