Wait, what? Two long weekends in a row? Yes, please!  Aucklander’s if you’re not heading away, never fear, because there’s plenty to do in the City of Sails this Waitangi Weekend! Whether you love sports, music, drama or festivals, it’s all on.

Downer NRL Auckland Nines | Eden Park

Head along to your favourite sporting park for two days of nines—there will be 16 NRL teams for this two-day, nine-per-side knock-out tournament.  As much about the fans who dress up and make it a party, Downer NRL Auckland Nines is an epic sporting event that’s not to be missed. Cirque Du Soleil: Quidam | Vector Arena

Back in their twisting, twining and spectacular glory, Cirque Du Soleil hits Vector Arena with Quidam. Telling the story of young Zoe, who is bored and whose parents ignore her, her life has lost all meaning. Seeking to fill the void, Zoe slides into an imaginary world: Quidam. Meet curious characters along her journey—acrobats, musicians, singers and actors—who showcase astonishing human agility.

Thursday 4th February

Barfoot and Thompson Twilight Summer Series | Ellerslie Racecourse

Joining Auckland’s ultimate week of sport is the the Barfoot and Thompson Twilight Racing at Ellerslie Racecourse. Get glammed up and head along with a buzzing crowd as you watch unforgettable horseplay. Bonus to you if you’ve got a Nine’s ticket (or wear your club’s NRL jersey), you’ll get free GA entry. There’s also a free sausage sizzle on the Newmarket lawn from 5.30—6.30 pm. There will be ongoing entertainment and DJ Kieran Bell will keep the tunes pumping into the night.

Auckland Zoo Open Late Nights | Auckland Zoo 

Bring along friends and family to the Auckland Zoo for Open Late Nights, every Thursday throughout February. Open from 5.30pm to 8pm, this is your chance to get up close and personal with the animals as they come alive in the evening and reconnect with your local zoo—one of the best things to do in Auckland.

Takapuna Beach French Festival | Takapuna Beach

Soak up a taste of France with the French Festival at Takapuna! In celebration of the Alliance Francaise French Film Festival coming to Takapuna, there will be markets, performers and entertainment from 4pm to 9pm.

Friday 5th February

Stan Walker | Auckland Zoo

He’s one of NZ’s favourite performers, and this Friday Stan Walker is performing at our favourite zoo this Friday. Bringing his full band and dancers, Stan will belt out the tunes we know and love at this very special, family friendly event. Get your tickets here.

Billy T Jams | Q Theatre

If you’ve been living under a rock, then chances are you haven’t realised that the NZ comedy scene is hot with talent at the moment! Head along to Q Theatre for a night of hilarity, showcasing the Billy T nominees for 2016. Hosted by 2014 winner, Guy Montgomery, this promises to be one hell of a night, so gather your friends and share a giggle.

Salsa @ The Mexican Café | The Mexican Café

Make your Friday nights sizzle from 10.30pm, and head along to The Mexican Café for its now famous Salsa party. A professional Salsa will be on the floor, ready to guide beginners in this hot dance style. There will be a DJ, full bar and food from the Happy Hour menu.

Saturday 6th February

Waitangi Day Festival | Bastion Point

Head along to Bastion Point—Takaparawhau for a family-focused Waitangi Day event. There will be live acts and you can take your own picnic, or enjoy food from stalls on site. There’ll be giant kites, live acts and cultural activities.

NZ Soul All Dayer | Silo Park

After successful shows in Aotea Square and Mt Maunganui, the NZ Soul All Dayer hits Silo Park to celebrate Waitangi Day. Starting at midday, expect a six-hour, quality selection of local DJs playing many shades of soul music—classic, rare groove, funk and boogie and more.

Sunday 7th February

Ben & Jerry’s Openair Cinema: Sundae Sessions—Joy | Western Springs

Head to Western Springs to watch J-Law and Bradley Cooper in this wild story of a family across four generations at Ben & Jerry’s first Sundae Sessions. Expect betrayal, treachery, the loss of innocence and scars of love during this emotional comedy. Make sure you get there early for live entertainment and to play games on the lawn before sitting back and relaxing with (free) ice cream in hand. Or a beer, wine or cider, if that’s your thing.

Chinese New Year @ SKYCITY | SKYCITY

Marking the beginning of 16 days of celebration, SKYCITY Auckland will come alive with lion dancing, acrobatic performances, monkey-making balloon artists, lanterns and of course Auckland’s iconic tower will be lit in red and gold to mark the occasion. Also, expect Federal St to be shining bright under an impressive lantern display.
