This Weekend In Auckland

By Marilynn McLachlan - 29 Oct 2015

this weekend in auckland, things to do in auckland

There’s no excuse for boredom this weekend with so many things to do in Auckland – you’ll have a cracker of a weekend. There’s shows, fashion, festivals and on Sunday you can tick off one of your bucket list items from the 50 Things You Should Have Done If You Live In Auckland.

Get your diaries out and start planning!

All Weekend

Le Noir – The Dark Side of Cirque | The Civic

Well known for captivating audiences with their intimate, provocative and down right impressive performances (who knew the human body could bend that way?), this is the dark side of Cirque. With award-winning athletes and the inclusion of the most dangerous circus act of all time—the Columbian Wheel of Death (the mind boggles), this 360-degree performance is something to put on your essential list of things to do in Auckland. Get your tickets here.

When: 28 October to 8 November

Guy and Dolls | Q Theatre

Popular Broadway musical Guys and Dolls’ Kiwi version hits Q Theatre tonight through until 5 December. Starring local actor Shane Cortese (most recently spotted on Step Dave) and a small cast of 15, it tells the story of Nathan Detroit who needs a home for his permanent floating crap dice game. To raise cash, he bets professional high-roller Sky Materson that he can’t date Sarah Brown (as you do). But then Sky and Sarah fall for each other… and it’s gambling with dice and love. We love the drama. Get your tickets here.

Big Boys Toys | ASB Showgrounds

You know what they say about boys and their toys…and for many a boy, this weekend is the one they look forward to most each year. Yep, it’s time again for Big Boys Toys 2015. And you know it’s going to be better than ever. It has the biggest collection of supercars all in one place including the Bond Edition Aston Martin DB9 GT. When they say Bond, they mean Bond, James Bond. But that’s not all—there’s a motorcycle show, a hoverboard (yes, they exist!), stunt driving, CrossFit comps and soooo much more. We can smell the testosterone already.

When: 30 October to 1 November

Halloween

It’s the dark night of the year this weekend and Auckland is delivering some serious spook. Check out our article about what to do for Halloween in 2015.

Thursday 29th

Dinner | MASU

The Urban List team went along to help celebrate award-winning restaurant MASU’s second birthday—and the launch of chef Nic Watt’s book called (what else?!) MASU. We drooled over the soft shell crab sliders and crayfish and spicy miso tacos and will be back soon. In the meantime, why not raise a glass and say happy birthday to MASU tonight? We’re guessing it probably gets booked out fairly quickly, so you know the drill.

Friday 30th

Height of Fashion: Hats off to Natalie Chan | The Sugar Club

She wowed at Fashion Week and here’s your chance to get up close and personal with Natalie Chan as she shows off her current collection and get a preview of the spring/summer 2016 collection….perfectly timed for the Melbourne Cup next week! Get your tickets!

Boney M | ASB Theatre

It may not be time for a holi-holiday, but Boney M will sure make you feel like it. Yep, that Euro disco, reggae group is back performing all the songs you know and love from the 70s and 80s for one night only. With their outrageous costumes and sing-along tunes, it will be a night to remember.

Saturday 31st

Mary’s Market | Freeman’s Bay Community Centre

Since 2006, Mary’s Market has provided Auckland parents and parents-to-be with samples, seconds and end of line baby clothes, toys and products. Held in the Freeman’s Bay Community Centre, this market is sponsored by Nature Baby, so it’s the perfect place to stock up on items for your little bundle or for that little niece or nephew you just adore, and is easily one of the great things to do in Auckland.

Visit your local bookshop | Around Auckland

Bibliophiles celebrate—today is all about you….ok, maybe more about the bookshops (It’s NZ Bookshop Day) but really, you're a match made in heaven. Mt Eden’s Time Out Bookstore has Ted Dawe (author of Into the River) around to help you choose books, there’s a party from 1-2.30pm for the kids and an all day bookstore scavenger hunt. Not far away, Ponsonby’s The Women’s Bookshop has packed the day with local celebs and authors you know and love—Michele A’Court, Ali Mau, Amanda Billing, Wendyl Nissen and Charlotte Grimshaw, to name just a few. It’s followed by a champagne party at 5pm. Check out the the Woman’s Bookshop for full details.

Sandringham Village Street Festival | Sandringham Road

With live bands, tasty street food, a craft market and kidzone, the Sandringham Village Street Festival will be a blast for locals and market lovers. Chill out to the music while stocking up on unique Christmas gifts for friends and family.

Sunday 1st

World Cup final | Around Auckland

All the training, the angst and determination come to a head with this early morning game. Sleep in your black pj’s if you have to, because now is the time to back black. Set the alarm to watch the mighty All Blacks do their thing. Prefer to share the excitement? Check out our list of where to watch the Rugby World Cup final 2015.

Auckland Marathon | North Shore

Running (or walking) the Auckland Marathon was in our list of 50 Things You Should Have Done If You Live In Auckland and today is the day to tick it off your bucket list. There are plenty of options to match every fitness level, from 5km to the full 42.195km run. If you’re not brave enough to give it a go, the sight of all those sweaty bods crossing the Harbour Bridge is worth checking out. Victoria Park is the official finish venue and will have entertainment throughout the day.

World Vegan Day Picnic | Auckland Domain

It’s World Vegan Day don’t cha know so head down to the Auckland Domain and join the World Vegan Day NZ Picnic. It kicks off at 2pm, with peeps meeting at the rotunda and it’s B.Y.O yummy vegan goodies.

Scandinavian Christmas Markets | Penrose

The twinkling fairy lights and ornate Christmas baubles of a Nordic Christmas are coming right to Auckland in this fifth annual Scandinavian Christmas Markets. Sponsored by Volvo Cars and LEGO NZ, it offers an opportunity to make this Christmas all the more magical and to ditch the tacky mass-produced decorations. Think home-baked cookies, vintage collectables, handcrafted and imported decorations, and more. Visit their Facebook page for the deets.
