Boredom is simply not an option this weekend with so many things going on in and around Auckland. Book to see a show or go to the Lantern Festival on Friday night, head along to Ponsonby Road on Saturday evening to support the Rainbow Community and then treat yourself to a VIP experience at the Land Rover NZ Polo on Sunday.
If that doesn’t take your fancy, there are plenty more options…
Polo | SkyCity Theatre
Head along to SkyCity Theatre for a night of clichéd laughter. Polo, by Dean Parker, is a slice-of-life play about an A-list group who attend the Polo, and their waiter, Matiu. Raunchy and scandalous, it’s a fantastic satirical production that ultimately asks if money and power lead to happiness. Get your tickets here.
Splore | Tapapakanga Park
For three days, the Splore festival hits the shores of Tapapakanga Regional Park. Expect great music, fresh energy and food trucks for when the hunger hits. Splore prides itself on being a state of mind and without boundaries, while being at one with nature. Get full deets on this epic weekend here.
Briefs | ASB Theatre
Aussie Cirque du Soleil meets Ru Paul’s Drag Race in this extravagant boylesque show, just in time to celebrate the Auckland Pride Festival. Get ready for some jaw-dropping aerial acrobatics and a whole lotta fun in this fast-paced performance. Get more info here.
Lantern Festival | Auckland Domain
This year’s Lantern Festival moves from Albert Park to the Auckland Domain, and will be the best yet. The Lantern Festival marks the end of the festivities celebrating the Chinese New Year. The lanterns come in all shapes and sizes and there are so many that they now fill a whopping 20 shipping containers. Head along any night from Thursday to Sunday for this popular event.
Thursday 18th February
Ben & Jerry’s Openair Cinema | Western Springs
Sit back, relax and enjoy the film Brooklyn at the Ben & Jerry’s Openair Cinema. It tells the story of Ellis (Saoirse Ronan) who left Ireland for a new life in Brooklyn where she meets Tony. When she needs to return to Ireland, Ellis promises to return but Tony’s not so sure…after all, home is home.
Friday 19th February
Romeo and Juliet | Pop-Up Globe
This year marks the 400th anniversary of the death of Shakespeare, so head along to Globe Theatre on Greys Ave for a performance of one of the world’s most unforgettable (and tragic) love stories, Romeo and Juliet. The Pop-Up Globe is a replica of the one built by Shakespeare and his company in 1614 and will showcase the Bard’s plays in the coming months. Get your tickets here.
Trans-Tasman Boxing Championships | Vodafone Events Centre
Ah…it’s that old sibling rivalry again, only this time Kiwi’s can literally and legally punch Australian’s in the head. Just jokes, guys, we love our Aussie neighbours! But, seriously, you can see Australians and Kiwis battle it out in this inaugural boxing event. Headlined by 2014 Commonwealth Gold Medallist, David Nyika, it will feature some of the best amateur boxers in Australia and NZ. More info here.
Saturday 20th February
Pride Parade | Ponsonby Road
Get ready for the most colourful night of the year! The Pride Parade is the highlight of the Auckland Pride Festival and is a spectacular showcase for the Rainbow Community. Head along to Ponsonby Road for what promises to be an evening of epic fun.
Sounds of Summer | Takapuna Beach
The Sounds of Summer return to the Commons Complex with a new set up. Listen to House music, Funk, Soul, old school RnB, Pop and more as you chomp down on fine food and sip refreshments. Get more info here.
Bic Runga and Tiny Ruins | Auckland Zoo
Head along to the Auckland Zoo for a special concert with award-winning musician Bic Runga and Hollie Fullbrook and her band, Tiny Ruins. Each will take to the rotunda with their respective bands, so grab a blanket and and chill out while listening to their tunes. You’re welcome to bring a picnic and drinks (no alcohol) but if organising a picnic seems too much work, then order a Zoo Picnic Hamper…which comes with vino. Further deets here.
Sunday 21st February
Land Rover NZ Polo | Clevedon
Fashionistas and sports lovers unite in this highly anticipated annual event. Held on the picturesque Fisher Fields in Clevedon, the Land Rover NZ Polo is a day with plenty of entertainment: watch the teams play, enter the Fashion On The Field, join the Stomping Of The Divots and then dance the night away at the after party. Take it up a notch and go for the VIP experience in the Orsini Marquee where there will be premium viewing space, champers and food from NSP.
