March is starting off with a bang with so many things to do in Auckland that you’ll be spoilt for choice. Whether you love a good show, you’re keen to reach your health and fitness goals or you prefer to dress up in your best for the races, there’s something for everyone.

All Weekend

Meow Meow’s Little Mermaid | Aotea Square

Forget Disney, this rollicking version of the Little Mermaid is a fairy tale gone rogue.

This is a sexy, post-modern diva who subverts Hans Christian Anderson’s mermaid tale of teen self-sacrifice, salvation and seduction. Featuring a live band and posse of cardboard cut-out princes and real-life prince Chris Ryan, it will be a show to remember.

Thursday 10th March

James II: Day of the Innocents | ASB Theatre

Watch history come alive through the eyes of six-year-old James II King of Scots in this murderous, violent, paranoid play. He is forced to fight feuding nobles and make brutal choices about the people he loves as he struggles to keep a hold of his sanity. This play is on both Thursday and Saturday nights, get your tickets here.

Unstrung Heroes with The Black Quartet | Aotea Square

They’ve played with everyone from Kanye West to the Auckland Philharmonic Orchestra, and for one night only Unstrung Heroes with The Black Quartet will perform their stunning arrangements. From Tiny Ruins and Lawrence Arabia to Rob Ruha, this talented bunch will bring you a uniquely special concert. Further deets here

Friday 11th March

Super Rugby: Blues Vs Hurricanes | Eden Park

They took out The Highlanders and now the Blues are back, this time battling the capitol’s Hurricanes. Get in behind your local team and head to Eden Park for a night of skill, speed and competition. Make sure you check out their new ‘True Believers, True Blues’ ticketing options.

Green Bay Street Food | Barron Drive, Green Bay

Bringing together the West Auckland community, Green Bay Street Food offers quality and healthy options with zero waste. This Friday, don that sombrero because it’s a Latin Fiesta with an amazing line up of South American vendors. With a backdrop of sounds from DJ Keegan, munch on delicious food from Judge Bao, CheLucio BBQ, Good Tacos, and Temaki Truck among others.

Oaks and Derby Festival | Alexandra Park

The Winger Group’s 2016 Oaks & Derby Festival at Alexandra Park is set to wind up with a lot of fun this Friday night.

Saturday 12th March

Barfoot & Thompson Auckland Cup Day | Ellerslie Racecourse

Auckland Cup Week will finish with a blast this Saturday with more than one million dollars at stake. Put on your finest and head along to the Viva Prix de Fashion competition, where the winner will take home prizes to the value of $30,000 before going on to Melbourne to compete. There will be DJ’s, music and a great vibe and is a great way to spend a Saturday!

Kumeu Show | Kumeu Showgrounds

From biggies to littlies, the Kumeu Show caters for all with competitions across multiple categories. Head along on either Saturday or Sunday and channel your inner monkey and scale the rock climbing wall or test your balance at the family-friendly ice skating rink. There will be sheep shearing competitions and the chance to see all your favourite farm animals from The Kumeu Agricultural and Horticultural Society.

White Night | Multiple Locations

From 6pm until midnight Auckland will be lit up for White Night. Head to Aotea Square for a variety of music and a performance from the White Face Crew, or enjoy the artwork of Tiffany Singh who will bring a rainbow of light to the Auckland Museum. Sunday 13th March

Auckland Fair | Shed 10

Ditch the malls this Sunday for Shed 10 where you’ll find New Zealand’s largest, exclusively handmade and curated market. With more than 90 makers from around the country showcasing art, clothing, homewares, toys, flowers, plants and more, there will be plenty to buy at the Auckland Fair. When you need a break, head to Little Yellow Café for some delicious coffee, before heading back into the crowds and feeling great because you’re shopping local.

St Patrick’s Day Festival | Ponsonby

Celebrating all things Irish (slightly early, but we’re all good with that), Ponsonby is set to go green this Sunday. There will be a parade along Ponsonby Road at 12pm with Irish-inspired floats, traditional music and dancing, bands and more. Meanwhile at Western Park there’s Fleadh with more dancing and singing as only the Irish do!

The Science Show: Big Bang, Little Bang! Nanogirl | Bruce Mason Centre

Join Nanogirl—a.k.a. Dr. Michelle Dickenson—as she brings science to the stage, blowing things up, blowing things over and blowing your mind. This show is safe for all ages and will include simple experiments to do at home. More deets here

Glory Days Highwic Art Deco Day Out | Highwic House

Head along to one of our fave old buildings, Highwic House, for a day celebrating the 1930s at the Glory Days Highwic Art Deco Day Out.  There will be live music, dancing, vintage cars, market stalls, tea, cake and cocktails and prizes for the best dressed.

Golden Photo Opportunity | Eden Park

Winning the Rugby World Cup is still strong in every Aucklanders memory and this Sunday, between 1pm and 3pm, you'll be able to get up-close-and-personal with the William Webb Ellis trophy.  Snap a pic for your Instagram and then watch Kevin Mealamu and the Blues training, go behind the scenes for a sneak-peak of what it would be like to be an All Black and there will be a bouncy castle and prizes too. Did we mention it's free? Noice.
