Move over, Ponsonby. There’s a new ‘burb shaking up Auckland’s brunch scene and it’s not where you’d expect. We’re talking about Avondale and a certain café that’s won our heart… and our stomach!
Introducing the new addition to your brunch hit list: Woodworks. The bustling cafe knows the way to your heart (read: tastebuds) with the likes of brioche French toast, crispy chicken waffles and an unmissable bene. And, better yet, it’s so much more than mouth-watering eats!
We were enticed to visit this West Auckland gem for a weekend brunch. We’d heard rumours of a new menu and—as suckers for all things delish—we needed to experience the hype for ourselves.
As we stepped inside, we were instantly impressed by Woodworks’ industrial yet welcoming décor. The open space showcases festoon lightbulbs, pops of greenery and—with a name like Woodworks—there’s a lot of (you guessed it) wood! From the floor and ceiling to the tables and bar area, this is one aptly named café.
Being shameless millennials, we started with turmeric and matcha lattes. There’s obvs also caffeinated bevvies and for those wanting something ‘stronger’, the bar is stocked with wine and beer. Alternatively, indulge in a comforting hot chocolate… served with a stick of Whittaker’s!
Staying true to the millennial status once again (don’t judge us), we ordered their smashed avo served on five-grain toast. The dish starred an impressive avo-to-toast ratio (aka LOTS of avocado) paired with onion jam, basil pesto and roasted capsicum hummus #drooool.
To balance the savoury, we tried the cinnamon brioche French toast alongside bourbon-infused banana, vanilla ice-cream and maple-glazed bacon—what a winning combo! Trust us: this mouth-watering brekkie will change your life.
Lunch at Woodworks is equally delish with burgers, quesadillas and beer-battered fish and chips. Our top pick is the bao bun brimming with panko-crumbed chicken, chipotle mayo and Asian cabbage slaw.
There’s also a dedicated pizza menu with everything you could ever dream of, from classic garlic to a vegetarian-friendly ‘funky popeye’ (think spinach, mushroom and blue cheese). Visit on a Friday evening (they’re open until 9pm) to nab a pizza and beer for just $20. The outdoor deck is the perfect vantage point for a sunset over the Waitakere Ranges. Just sayin’...
Co-owner Tarun tells us the café isn’t theirs—it’s the customers. They’ve considered the little things: the deck is dog-friendly, there are high chairs for littlies and there’s ample on-site parking—a rarity in Auckland! Birthday shindig, hen’s party or business meeting? Book the private dining room and leave the catering to the talented kitchen team.
It looks like West IS best and it’s thanks to the likes of Woodworks. Tick this one off your brunch hit list and be sure to check out that French toast.
