Chilly days (and, let’s be honest, not-so-chilly days) are made for sipping hot chocolate. And while it’s fine and dandy to have one made for you, sometimes you just wanna get in there yourself. This is where deconstructed hot chocolates come in.
Order one of these delights and you’ll be served a tray with all the components you need to create your perfect choc bevvy. We’re talking petite jugs of chocolate and cream accompanied with marshmallows and other treats. It feels like somewhat of a science experiment as your pour, mix and—of course—drink your creation.
Luckily for us, the fun novelty is taking Auckland by storm. Here are three Auckland cafes to grab a deconstructed hot chocolate. Remember, they will be no blaming the barista if things go pear-shaped (not that it’s possible)—you’ve only got yourself to blame!
Cornwall Park Café
Hot chocolate is serious business at the picturesque Cornwall Park Café. Order their much-loved drink and you’ll be served a tray with all the goodies: chocolate syrup, milk, cream, chocolate powder, marshmallows AND Cadbury Flake. Phew…that’s a whole of deliciousness. We’ll leave it up to you to decide where to start. Visit over summer and go for their iced version—it’s equally delish!
At Rosie in Parnell they have two deconstructed choccies on offer. Go for the classic valrhona chocolate or—our personal fave—their salted caramel. You’ll be served a glass of steaming milk alongside a jug of thick, decadent hot chocolate to pour through your drink. Their drinks get extra brownie points (pun intended) because they’re served with brownie pieces to munch on—or add to your drink if you’re that way inclined.
Takapuna Beach Café
Takapuna Beach Café is giving Shore kids a piece of the deconstructed action. The drink stars a glass of rich chocolate ganache alongside a carafe of steamed milk. It also comes with a side of chocolate pieces for good measure. If it’s a sunny Takapuna day, we suggest you opt for their iced deconstructed bevvies. The refreshing drinks star the café’s award-winning gelato and come in four flavours: coffee, chocolate, mocha and salted caramel.
