Let’s be honest, the way to someone’s heart is through their stomach. Whether you’re looking to impress your Tinderella/Tinderfella or you’re happily married with kids, a table for two is always a good idea.
But where oh where to go? Your date night spot must not only have incredible food and drink, but also great ambience. This is where Britomart’s Ortolana comes in.
Serving contemporary European fare morning, noon and night, this inner-city oasis is the ultimate date pozzy. Here’s why your significant other will love it.
The Quaint Spot Is Oh-So Beautiful
Away from the hustle and bustle of the city, you’ll stumble upon Ortolana. Picture a quaint little courtyard tucked away in Britomart. Inside the stunning venue, you’ll discover an arched wooden ceiling showcasing glass pendant lights resembling bubbles. There are exposed brick walls, cushioned seating and urban-meets-country vibes. And while the space is delightfully beautiful, it’s far from being stiff and pretentious.
Dine Inside…Or Underneath The ‘Stars’
If this is a first-date scenario, keep things casual with a seat around the wooden shared table that stretches the length of the interior. Alternatively, there are tables for two along the edges of the space.
However, we can’t go past dining al fresco in the outdoor courtyard. There’s a canopy to keep you dry from drizzle and, if things get chilly, there are toasty heaters and blankets on hand. Visit in the evening and twinkling fairy lights doubling as stars shine from above—so romantic!
They’ve Got Garden-To-Table Dining Perfected
Ortolana is part of Hipgroup’s incredible eateries. The much-loved team is behind the likes of Amano, Takapuna Beach Café, Rosie and Kohi Corner. And, if you’re familiar with these Auckland institutions, you’ll know their food philosophy is pretty darn epic.
How so? Hipgroup—including Ortolana—embrace a farm-to-table philosophy with produce coming straight from their Kumeu farm and direct from local suppliers. It’s only fitting Ortolana translates to “market gardener” in Italian. What’s more, meat is locally sourced while fish is sustainably caught by local fishermen. The result is a seasonal menu that is mouth-wateringly delicious.
The Food Is Sure To Impress
Ortolana’s menu has you spoilt for choice. The ever-changing menu gives you the perfect excuse to visit again (and again!). Expect to find dishes such as kingfish crudo, gnudi (gnocchi-like dumplings) and smoked lamb backstrap.
Ortolana is known for their piadina (Italian flatbread) packed with the likes of garlic, rosemary and mozzarella—yum! We must also give special mention to their signature chicken cotoletta. While the garnishes change seasonally, this dish has been on the menu since day one—it’s that good!
Milse Will Take Care Of Dessert
Stick around for dessert because Milse (aka one of the best dessert restaurants everrr) has got it covered. Pro tip: when you arrive at Ortolana, give your waiter the heads-up you’d like dessert from their sister restaurant and they’ll pop you on Milse’s wait-list.
Alternatively, stay right where you are because Ortolana serves a selection of Milse’s irresistible treats. Think dulcey and pear tart, zesty lemon meringue and their world-famous gelato sticks.
