Adding to the forever-burgeoning City Works Depot, on Friday we welcomed The Raw Kitchen—quite possibly the sweetest new opening we’ve seen in some time. And, despite the stress that must come with opening a new location, owner Olivia Scott is all smiles.
That’s because there’s plenty to smile about at her new outpost. The industrial space is full of natural light, the raw concrete contrasts perfectly with the girly additions of blush tables and stools, vases, flowers and vines. Climb a spiral staircase and upstairs you’ll find a lounge set-up where comfy sofas at the ready to assist in a much-needed respite if you’re having a hectic day.
Olivia has been making raw cakes for a handful of years now. Initially, she’d handcraft them for private clients, before setting up shop weekly as a stall at La Cigale French Markets. Demand was at an all-time-high so the next logical step was creating her own bricks-and-mortar eatery. Since then, she’s been selling her raw sweet treats, salads, smoothies and coffees out of two locations—one in New Market and the other in Ponsonby. But she couldn’t pass up the opportunity to take over the new location—she fell in love with the character of the building at City Works Depot and has complete confidence this position will be the most popular one yet.
The cabinet is brimming full of healthy offerings. To start the day right, their chia puddings are soaked with coconut milk and topped with an ultra-crunchy buckwheat muesli or try one of their breakfast bowls—the ‘caramel chai’ is a genius concoction of chai spice, coconut nectar, banana, vanilla bean, sea salt, cacao muesli, coconut and cacao nibs from the menu. The ‘pink panther’ made from rhubarb, strawberry, bananas, dates, cacao muesli, coconut and berries is a must-try.
For something savoury, opt for their collard wrap. Bold in flavour, with a friendly play on Mexican cuisine, the dark green leafs enclose spiced walnut mince, avocado cream, slaw and plenty of fresh herbs. The ‘goodness box’ is a delectable assortment of zoodles, broad beans, sauerkraut, hummus and gluten free bread—mix and match every mouthful. The salads are vibrant and flavourful. The caramelised beet, almond feta cream, greens, balsamic and dill is our pick, but you can be assured they’re all top-notch.
Make sure you save room for a slice of one of their famous raw cakes and wash it all down with a ‘jaffa’ milkshake made from almond mylk, raw cacao powder, orange, cacao nibs, coconut nectar, vanilla bean and a pinch of sea salt to bring out the flavour. Or, if you’re hooked on matcha, like us, they whip up a perfectly green take with almond mylk and vanilla bean, sweetness thanks to a dash of almond mylk.
In a very handy location to the hoards of gym-goers and fitspo people using Vic Park as their playground and the countless offices in the surrounding areas, we’re certain The Raw Kitchen is going to be one busy spot. And we’d like to personally thank Olivia for making healthy eating attainable, unintimidating and most of all, tasty. We know where we’ll be eating every lunch now!
