What Not To Miss At This Year’s Food Show

By Marilynn McLachlan - 29 Jul 2016

10 things not to miss at the 2016 food show auckland

If there’s one place you need to be this weekend, it’s The Food Show. The annual event is on every foodie’s (or even not so foodie) calendar. What’s not to love about trying new foods, products, wine and getting the chance to chat to the people behind the brands you know and love—and as well as newbies to the scene?

The Urban List hit the ASB Showgrounds on its first day to round up the 10 things you just can’t miss at this year’s Food Show.

Just remember—you’re gonna be working your way through a fair bit of eating and buying, so buy a bag and wine glass from the information desks first. You won’t regret it.

#1 Street Food Alley

If you’ve got a rumble in your tummy that samples just won’t fill, make sure you head to Street Food Alley. The dumplings from Akemi’s Gyoza are out of this world good, but if you prefer something with a little sweetness, cute caravan Minty B Ice Creamery is there to satisfy you. You’ll also find Good George Brewing, Naanz, Nanam Eatery and Ripe Deli.

#2 Loving Earth Display

Speaking of the ol’ sweet tooth, if chocolate is your thing, then pay a visit to Loving Earth. Even more than being super-delicious, there are SO many samples, you’ll be in heaven. Even better, Loving Earth is an ethics-based company and focuses on health. You’ll find raw chocolate of yummy flavours (we were partial to the creamy coconut mylk) so you can shop up a storm.

#3 Made of Auckland Stand

This ATEED stand is jam-packed filled with everything you didn’t know you needed—until now. With a focus on the boutique and artisan, there are 20 producers to look at. You’ll be able to sample Happy Valley Honey, Oh La La Chocolates and Mahurangi Oysters. Yes, oysters.

#4 Margarine Sculptures

Life-sized and incredibly detailed, make sure you look out for the margarine sculptures around the venue, marvelling at the artist who made them.

#5 VIP Lounge

If you plan on making your day a FULL day, then chances are, you’re going to want to rest those weary bones, right? Well, do so in luxury in the VIP lounge. Here you’ll find plenty of seats, an exclusive goodie bag, celebrity chef meet and greets and limited reserved front row seating in the Whirlpool Cooking Theatre.

#6 The Whirlpool Cooking Theatre

And, speaking of theatres, one of the highlights of the entire long weekend is, of course, The Whirlpool Cooking Theatre. This is where some of your fave chefs will perform live cooking demonstrations. There’s no extra charge for these above your entry fee. You’ll see the likes of the fabulous Annabelle White, superstar Sachie Nomura, Simon Gault, Megan May, Josh Emett and MORE. Get along!

#7 Make Your Own Doughnuts

We here at The Urban List are all about the doughnuts, and at the Original Foods Baking Co. stand. For just a couple of dollars, you can decorate your own doughnut so it’s oh-so-pretty. Be warned, the sweet goodness on this particular stand is insane.

#8 Drink Black Water

Errr, what, we hear you ask? Black water? Yep, the new drinking trend is black water. This alkaline mineral water is filled with plant-sourced nutrients and contains 77 trace minerals, antioxidants and unbelievably has a pH level of 8.0+. Your body will be thanking you!

#9 Eat French

Oo la la! Add a taste of France to your day and visit the L’Authentique Charcuterie stand. They’re serving up pate and sausages, but not as you know them! This is handmade deliciousness imported by two Frenchmen and the result is amazing. Spend up large here.

#10 Eat Bugs

What’s your feelings towards bugs, because eating them is on the upwards trend. It turns out that they provide ample protein, while looking after Mother Earth. While raising animals requires epic amounts of water and green house gases, crickets pack a protein punch, don’t use a lot of water and are much better for the environment. Make your way to the Edible Insects stand and taste a bug and spend up large while you’re there. Crick-et!
