Sky Tower? Seen it. Mount Eden? Seen it. Kiwi bird? Didn’t see it. In fact, don’t worry about the last one. But we feel you, Auckland can be touristy and somewhat ‘samey’. When you don’t have that much time in the City of Sails, it can be easy to fall into the trap of just following the crowd and doing the ‘norm’ things that are on offer.
Here at The Urban List, we pride ourselves on all things Auckland, so as expected, we have your back. Read on, grab your camera and prepare to set off on your very own Auckland adventure.
Sand Duning At Lake Wainamu
Work those calves and trudge through the shimmering, black sand dunes of Bethells Beach for an experience unlike any other. Not only will you be rewarded with top-notch views of Lake Wainamu, you’ll also be able to body board for a speedy and sandy journey down! Don’t forget your togs, as the lake is a popular swimming spot too! Overall, this is a great off the beaten track spot to explore. Go, go, go!
Parnell Rose Gardens And Casa Del Gelato
Smell your way through the roses at this historic, petal filled paradise (aka Parnell Rose Gardens). Stroll hand-in-hand with a loved one and act all candid as you pose for selfies amongst the blooms. As you explore Parnell in all its glory, ‘accidentally’ stumble across Casa Del Gelato for your freakshake fix. Pretty flowers and killer milkshakes, will make your Insta feed soar!
Zipline Over Waiheke
Yes, you may have heard of Waiheke and all of its vineyard-laden gloriousness, but did you know that you can zipline through one of them?! Strap into your harness and prepare for the adrenaline to pump! As you speed through the vines, you’ll be able to look forward to the rest of your Waiheke adventure. With various packages available, you can add in some delicious food and slurp-worthy wines to your epic, zipline experience!
Scooter Around Waiheke
Instead of choosing the conventional ‘hire a car’ mode of transport, don a helmet and hire a scooter to explore Auckland’s own paradise Island. Perfect on a sunny day, you’ll be able to witness Waiheke in all its glory. Stop off whenever you choose for beach breaks and dip your toes in the crystal clear waters or go for swim—if you dare!
Set amongst native, New Zealand bush, Mokoroa Falls is a majestic and magical landmark amongst the Waitakere region. Suitable for most levels of tramper, and with just a short descent down to the base, visitors will be treated to crashing waters and stunning views. Pack a picnic and chow down on your sammies while taking in the incredible surroundings. Feeling brave? Splash around in the swimming spot, just ten minutes from the waterfall.
Explore Herald Island
One of Auckland’s best kept secrets and unbeknown to a lot of Jafas, Herald Island is a quaint community accessible by one road only—and even that is hidden amongst mangroves. With regular and varied events taking place—such as the annual build a raft race and the island-wide garage sale—and with the secluded and tucked away Christmas Beach, it’s time to enjoy the charm of this Auckland secret spot.
4x4 At Muriwai Beach
Find someone with a 4x4 and head up to the black sands of Muriwai for an adrenaline-filled adventure. Get ready for a whole lotta screaming and heart-pumping action, as you tackle the black sands in your motor vehicle machine! Take the lesser-known entrance at Rimmers Road, hit the beach with your buddies and skid along the sand!
Tawharanui Rock Pools
Worth the drive and worth the walk back, Tawharanui is a beautiful Pōhutukawa-lined reserve, full of exploring opportunities and hidden spots. Whether you want to bask in the sun on the beach, snorkel and swim in the sea, or explore the hidden rock pools at low tide, Tawharanui is the perfect place to do just that. Keep your camera at the ready as this spot is often frequented by orcas and dolphins too!
Grab Fish And Chips At Piha
No list would be complete without a mention of Blairs on the Beach and their awesome ‘fush and chups’. After a fantastic day exploring Piha and surrounding areas, make like a local and grab a takeout of crunchy battered fish and fluffy fries as you watch the sun go down over Lion Rock. Now, what could be more perfect than that, eh?
