If you’ve spent any time on the North Shore (or actually, pretty much anywhere in Auckland), you’ll probably have come across a fair few South Africans. While we still don’t understand the difference between ‘just now’ and ‘now now,’ South African food is one thing we can definitely get on board with. It’s true, the best braai is the one you have yourself and no rusks will ever compare to Ouma’s, but nevertheless Auckland has a multitude of great places you can get some lekker South African food.

South African Restaurants In Auckland

White Cloud Spur

Albany

Classic South African steakhouse Spur Steak Ranches hit Aotearoa’s shores in 2016 and has been serving up sizzling burgers and steaks to Saffa’s on the North Shore ever since. Start with crumbed mushrooms and follow with a juicy Cheddamelt burger or the protein rich chilli con carne steak. Yep, that’s exactly what you think it is—a steak topped with chilli con carne. Wash it all down with a rock shandy (or a rooibos tea, if you’re being good) for some added nostalgia. With a menu pretty much identical to the one back in the Motherland, visit White Cloud Spur for the ultimate taste of home.

Rack N Roll Ribs

Browns Bay & Mt Wellington

Originating in the heart of South African territory (Browns Bay), Rack N Roll Ribs have some of the best ribs in town. Go for their half rack served with chips and basted in their sensational homemade barbecue sauce. If you’re over the ribs thing, their peri-peri chicken is pretty incredible too. South Africans love pudding and Rack N Roll Ribs deliver excellent renditions of two of the classics, malva pudding and peppermint crisp tart. Rack N Roll also has a food truck, so you can hire them for weddings, birthdays or any other time you need your South African food fix.

Bushman’s Grill

Hillcrest

After 24 years in the Zimbabwean and South African food industries, the team behind Bushman’s Grill decided to bring their expertise to New Zealand. Taking the finest local ingredients and cooking it in a new and different way, owners Shane and Dee deliver mouth-watering South African food to suit every palate. Serving up a range of steaks, ribs (we’re sensing a theme here), flame-grilled chicken and mixed grill options, the chefs at Bushman’s Grill are wild about good food. Your meal will be accompanied by all the finest drinks you remember from home—think Creme Soda, Iron Brew, Amarula and, of course, Savanna Dry.

Fred’s Fine Foods is a go to for South Africans in search of all things lekker. Stocking all the products ex-pats or South African food enthusiasts could ever want, Fred’s has everything from Zoo Biscuits to Pronutro to chakalaka. Fred’s stocks many of the ingredients needed to make traditional South African recipes, such as maize meal for pap and tennis biscuits for peppermint crisp tart. Fred’s also makes some insanely good biltong and droewors, as well as their own boerewors. Basically, no matter what you’re craving, Fred’s has got you covered.

Pinehill Butchery

Pinehill

While this is not a store dedicated to solely South African goods, it can’t be denied that Pinehill Butchery produces some of the best biltong in Auckland. They’ve also got droewors, cabanossi and boerewors so you’ll find something you love whatever your preference. Our favourite? Their extra hot chill bites. So spicy, so good.

Once you’ve picked up your Lip Ice and Zam-Buk, treat yourself to some Chappies, Fizzers or Jelly Tots, or perhaps all three if you’re feeling a little wild!
