Stop everything you’re doing. Immediately. The clouds have parted and a blessing has arrived in the form of a new menu at our beloved Orleans. And yes, it’s as brilliant as you could ever imagine. It’s a big call but we reckon the arrival of these newest iconic eats may even call for a national holiday (we can never get enough three-day weekends, right?).
The team at everyone’s favourite southern-style New Orleans-inspired eatery have been hard at work crafting up a menu, so it was our duty to head along to try it out. While it features the same classics we know and love, the new facelift is definitely something worth raving about.
Situated in Britomart, Orleans has a dim, secretive feel with a cool vibe that makes you feel as though you’ve left real life and all of it’s stresses behind. At least for the hours you’re there.
The star of the new menu is easily the insane waffle stack. Not for the faint-hearted, this bad boy is the masterpiece every Auckland foodie has been waiting for. It features a massive tower of their famous fluffy waffles, fried chicken, tater tots, pork belly and bacon pieces covered in oozing cheese and a sassy slaw, surrounded in a pool of curly fries of-course. What’s that sound? That’s your heart skipping a beat, just like ours did when we laid our eyes on the towering beauty. Oh, did we also mention it’s smothered in a cheeky dirty gravy? With a strong maple syrup oomph it’s packed with all the deliciousness you can imagine.
If waffles doesn’t tickle your fancy (who even are you?) then opt for their house pastrami! A moreish board serving up pastrami with a kick, andouille sausage, mustard, pickles and rye bread toast, makes this one hell of an epic sammy.
Vegos! There’s something for you too! A staff favourite, the fried cauliflower is served over a rich indulgent helping of mac ’n cheese. By no means ordinary, you’ll be pleasantly surprised to find it has a special Orleans twist with cayenne sauce that’ll take your taste buds on an adventure of a lifetime.
We’re a big fan of options, and if you’re like us and need a bit of variety, the small plates menu is for you. Our pick would have to be the jalapeño and cheese cornbread served up hot and fresh alongside a smoky tomato jam and heavenly herb butter. Hello new addiction.
Of course, it wouldn’t be Orleans without its slaw. Not your average, this firecracker is doused in a cumin lime mayo dressing, with peanuts and pepitas.
There’s also a fresh take on potato salad, which stars grilled tots, bursts of celery, red onion, red pepper remoulade with seasonal and totally underrated deep fried okra.
You didn’t think we’d forget the treats did you? Adding to an already decadent selection of dessert pies, they’ve upped the ante by adding two new slices sure to be your vice. Try the white chocolate and rhubarb and spiced pumpkin—two winners in our books! Can’t decide? Don’t sweat it, a cheeky $20 will get you a selection of three!
It’s not just the eats that’ve had a renovation, brand new cocktails have also made their way onto the menu. Our pick would be the azure colada, made with real coconut cream, havana white rum, pineapple, citrus and blue curacao, it’s the most smurfilicious drink in all of Auckland! But the classics are here to stay—what would we do without their legendary southern iced tea!?
Drooling yet? Plan your next (or second, we won’t judge) cheat day and get down to Orleans for a bit of mighty fine southern hospitality to see what all the fuss is about. We guarantee you won’t be disappointed.
