Is there anyone in the world who doesn’t just about fall over themselves when they see the words soft shell crab on a menu? There’s something about that crunch and the melt in your mouth goodness that just gets you every time. And the fact that they’re served fried nine times out of 10 doesn’t hurt either.

Whether you’ve tried it or not, these are the best places to indulge in some soft-shell crab in Auckland

Saan

Ponsonby

If you are yet to try soft-shell crab, then Saan is where you’ll want to pop your cherry. Order the Lon Phu Nim, crispy fried soft shell crab with pickled crab & coconut sauce, dill & coriander. Delish!

Blind Basket

Takapuna

If burgers and fries are more your thing, then you must try the soft shell crab burger at Blind Basket in Takapuna. Served in a sesame seed bun with a fried egg, and a side of fries, it will make your day.

The Crab Shack

Quay Street

The name says it all at The Crab Shack in Auckland’s CBD. Be prepared to get messy, while slurping and slopping on fine seafood.  There are a couple of different ways to have your soft shell crab, including tempura tacos and ‘shack boards.’ Bring your bib and dig in!

Ebisu

Quay Street

Residing in the Britomart precinct, Ebisu knows what’s up when it comes to quality Japanese food.  It’s difficult to choose just a few plates, with all of them mouth-wateringly good. But it’s the crisp soft shell crab that’s grabbing our attention.

FishSmith

Herne Bay

Known for some of the best fish and chips around town, FishSmith also serves up a pretty darn good soft shell crab burger. Otherwise known on the menu as a ‘bun,’ the soft shell crab comes with slaw, spring onion and spicy mayo. We’re opting for a side of fries too.

Tao

Newmarket

Newmarket’s newest Chinese cuisine, Tao, is worth a visit. Serving up a fine selection of Chinese dishes, the soft shell crab is not to be missed. Water it down with a craft beer or Tao creation cocktail.

MASU

Federal St

When celeb chef Nic Watt heads a restaurant, you know the food is going to be good. Japanese bar and restaurant MASU, serves contemporary Japanese dishes cooked over hot coals and served right in front of you. The soft shell crab is a dish that won’t be forgotten easily.

The Tin Kitchen

Ponsonby

Why stay in one place when you can move around? It was obviously the thoughts of owner Matt Ross of The Tin Kitchen. The food truck serves up delicious burgers including pork belly, spiced pulled lamb, and, perhaps its most famous, the soft shell crab burger. Keep up-to-date with where the truck is over the coming months via their Facebook page.
