Sometimes you just need a little something extra to get you through the week. And, lucky for us in Auckland, it doesn't matter what day it is—there are plenty of places pumping every night of the week.
To help you through your merry week, we’ve compiled a list of the best places to go for that mid-week pick me up.
The Kingslander hosts salsa nights on Wednesdays! Go to a lesson before so you don’t make a fool of yourself then show off your newly learnt skills afterwards with DJ El Capitano and a live Banda Latina once a month. It's only $10! And if you’re already a pro then entry is $5. You’ll be the envy of your friends when you break out your steamy salsa moves at parties. Eat, drink, dance and be merry.
Everybody’s everynight. This is the perfect place to wind down after a long work day and give your mind a break to get you through the week. Buy a board to share a few bevvies and you’re set for the night. Indulge in the Everybody’s platter which gives you a taste of everybody’s faves—Tokyo chicken nibbles, calamari, olives, beef fat fries, charcuterie AND toasted sourdough. Add some friends to your order and you’ll have everything you need.
Orleans, in true Southern style, has live music from Wednesday to Sunday. Get a feed, grab a drink and enjoy the eclectic mix of jazz, blues, R ‘n’ B, indie rock and reggae. If we were to choose any day, Wednesday would be the one because we cannot go past their lunchtime Waffle and Shake Deal. The maple glazed chicken and a special ever-changing shake is their version of a heart attack booster mid week fat boost. Don’t worry it is still on the menu every day!
Named after Grand Central Station in the bright lights of New York City Grand Central brings some sparkle to Ponsonby. Just like the city that never sleeps, this is the only place that has live music every night. If you’re brave try out your singing skills in front of an audience or just go along for a laugh on Monday nights. From Tuesday an array of musicians, bands and singers will entertain from 9 pm. Grand Central has a spot for every New Yorker at heart. Whatever your vibe, cosy up on the couches, laze in the laneway or party in front of the stage.
Ponsonby Social Club
Just down the road from Grand Central Ponsonby Social Club is also pumping. From Wednesdays to Saturdays they host the best DJs in town. So, if you’re down for a mid-week boogie in a club, then this should be your regular. So what are you waiting for? Put your dancing shoes on!
The blacked out windows of Golden Dawn give it an air of mystery. Ponsonby’s very own Tavern of Power is an indie bar with mid-week events to match. Check out their schedule and you’ll find mulled wine nights, disc jockeys, and night markets. Omnivores, vegetarians, vegans and people who do not tolerate gluten all are welcome. The pulled pork is not to be missed and the vegan alternative BBQ pulled jackfruit is something you won’t find on many menus in Auckland. Furthermore, they support wines that are organic, artisan and sustainable.
Britomart Country Club
Auckland’s very own secret garden bar Britomart Country Club is buzzing every night of the week. Grab a bargain every Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday because BCC offers their gourmet burgers, Margherita pizza or sandwiches for just $10 before 3 pm. They also offer enticing colourful cocktail jars named after sporting greats. Who wouldn’t want a bit of David Beckham or Le Bron? Or you can get a jug if you’re thirsty.
Dr Rudi’s isn’t just a bar, nor a brewery, nor a restaurant, nor a bowling alley. It’s all four! They have a lot going on any day of the week. Knock out the competition with your dazzling strikes and spares. Take their pizza by the foot as another kind of challenge. And don’t forget about the dessert pizzas… Nutella and banana or peach and ginger take your fancy? It’s the perfect weekday haunt.
