Where To Play Lawn Bowls In Auckland

Once known for being a pastime for pensioners and about as exciting as watching paint dry, lawn bowls is now finally standing up for itself.

Fast becoming the it game to be playing this summer, lawn bowls is making you rethink its once ‘boring’ reputation, as people flock to the greens to bowl some balls.

With a lot of places only offering members-only opportunities, we wanted to hunt out and include the best places for non-members and newbies to play, alongside a host of family-friendly social events and tournaments.

What are you waiting for? Knock ‘em dead!

Ponsonby Bowling Club

Located on the popular and cafe-filled Jervois Road, Ponsonby Bowling Club is an ideal location for an afternoon of fun-and-friendly competition. And, for only $20 you can have a day of unlimited bowling—How good is that?! All you need is a small group to play against and a steady aim. After you have (hopefully) won, you’ll be able to stroll down Jervois Road and order in some delicious post-game grub at this delicious cafe.

Auckland Bowling Club

With their greens believed to be the oldest in the Southern Hemisphere, it’s no wonder the members at Auckland Bowling Club are such pros. Even with many opportunities to join this elite club, at various prices, we still can’t go past their Business House Bowls. Known to be a great spring and summer team-building exercise, teams have the chance to brush up on skills, before taking part in the main event—the tournament! With a little healthy competition followed by a communal BBQ, this is a great way to bring friends and office buddies together.

Balmoral Bowling Club

Now this is one way to do after work, summer drinks! Every Wednesday and Thursday, head to the Balmoral Bowling Club for their social supper bowls event. For just $5 entry per person, you can take part in the tournament, where you might just win yourself some of the cash prize afterwards! While enjoying your winnings, sip on a pint with friends, family or workmates as you make the most of the sausage sizzle too!

Onehunga Bowling Club

Did someone say burger and bowls? Onehunga Bowling Club has nailed Friday nights this summer, with the help of their $15 burger and bowls deal. Book in with your team to take part in a competitive game of lawn bowls, followed by a lip-smackingly good feed of burger and fries. Now, we don’t know about you, but this certainly puts the same old, after work drinks to shame.

Saint Heliers Bowling Club

With so may different opportunities for non-members to play, we couldn’t miss out on including Saint Heliers Bowling Club on our list. When the greens are free from tournaments and special events, for just $10 per head, you can bowl away to your heart’s content! They also have their very own Business House Bowls, where teams can partake in games, complete with prize-giving and a free BBQ! There’s also opportunity for functions too where groups can learn to play this lovely game, with the expert advice of club members.

Browns Bay Bowling Club

In the early summer months of 2017, Browns Bay Bowling Club is offering several different playing opportunities for newbies to the sport. Take part in the ever-popular Barefoot Bowls, where all you’ll need is bare feet, a little aim and a good attitude! For just ten bucks, your bowling will include loads of laughs, bowls and a sausage sizzle afterwards. Great for all ages and skill levels, it’s an awesome experience to enjoy with friends and family.
