12 Fantastic Things To Do This Weekend In Brisbane

By Erin Curtain - 17 May 2018

Keep calm everybody, the royal wedding is this weekend and, Brisbane, we must greet this moment with class and style. Though it may not actually have much or in fact anything to do with us in the slightest, Meghan Markle has decided without the aid of reality TV that she does indeed wanna marry Harry and that in itself is worth celebrating! If the televised wedding of two people you've never met is not your cup of tea, Brisbane is still a flippin great place to be this weekend, not least because Paniyiri is back and the biggest cake decorating show you've ever seen is in town.

Bring the class and sophistication, plus a little flamboyance and fun this weekend; here's our top 11 things to do eat, see and do. It's a win win.

All Weekend

MELT 2018

MELT 2018 will be melting the lines of gender, sexuality, and pretty much every other social construct to celebrate love and community with a festival of queer arts and culture. Brisbane Powerhouse will be hosting a sensational line-up of theatre, burlesque, pageants, games, and parties, so it’s time to glue down your eyebrows and bust out the nip tape to keep your glamour game strong for the next two weeks!

There will be live demos, workshops, sculpture shows, and Australia’s ultimate cake decorating competition taking place! Oh, plus there will be cake samples. So. Many. Samples.

Check out Australia’s biggest cultural festival this weekend, the Paniyiri Greek Festival and celebrate everything Greek. There will be food, drink, and culture to soak in this Saturday from 4pm, with over 30 food stalls to gorge yourself on. Royal Wedding At The Treasury

The day is finally upon us. Ring the bells, strap on your heels, and binge-watch every episode of Suits, because Meghan Markle is about to become a Princess! Or a Duchess or magician or whatever, the main point is that a lot of hoighty toighty English tradition will be played out, and The Treasury casino will be hosting a totally elegant royal screening and reception for the soon to be newlyweds! For all you less boujee royal fanatics, Event Cinemas will be screening the big day as well, so you can see the intricate details of each ugly fascinator on their big screens.

Shangri-La Queer Disco

Head to the Tivoli for what they have described as a mythical and heavenly queer disco, Shangri-La. Starting at 7:30pm, Australia’s best underground queer DJs will be spinning all the tunes you could ever ask for at a queer disco, from old school to modern icons. They will also feature renowned queer performers to liven up the evening, so wear something scandalously gorgeous and show up to Brisbane’s biggest clubbing night of the year.

Welcome To Bowen Hills will be holding this heart-wrenchingly adorable event, which will feature the first annual tiny dog race, a best dressed tiny dog competition, and food trucks and pop-ups for both you and your pooch. The entire day is focused on the search to find Brisbane’s tiniest dog, so if you like your doggos on the small side you cannot miss this festival of the cute and tiny.

FA Cup Final

Sports. Not exactly my forte, but word on the street (and by street, I mean google) is that the FA Cup is a reasonably important soccer game that people are jolly excited about. Manchester United will be up against Chelsea in the final round (apparently, this is also a 'big deal'), so The Pig ‘N’ Whistle will be screening the game at 2am so that all you dedicated sports fans can communally yell at the tiny people on the screen in real time!
