Pubs

The Alliance Hotel

By Kate McCart - 20 Mar 2013

Every Aussie loves a good pub. Hearty, well-priced grub and a few schooners always go down a treat. But sometimes it's hard to embrace the beer-soaked carpet, plague of pokie machines, off-smelling singleted folk in stubbies and pluggers, and dim-lit dinginess that has inundated the Brissie pub scene. Or is that just me?

Enter The Alliance Hotel. We're talking old school pub, here. And, a pretty fancy one at that. Gastronomic food, boutique beers, fine wine, and zero poker machines! Go ahead, slap yourself, but trust me, you're awake. Gents (and ladies, of course), all your wildest dreams have come true at this Spring Hill locale.

The watering-hole come bistro is owned by Meagan Miller and Nick Gregorski. Ring a bell? You've probably heard the name before… Nick comes from a long line of publicans—yes, his parents owned the QA in its height of gloriousness back in the nineties. Down to earth, and your new best mate, Nick has transformed the 1888 building into three levels of fine food and darn good plonk.

On the menu, you'll find good ol' pub staples like steak and veal cutlets—dolled up a bit. Say goodbye to the undressed salad and McCain's frozen chips, and make room for slaw, duck fat potatoes, and blue cheese soufflé on your plate.

If you don't feel like going the whole hog, the bar menu is equally brilliant. Spanish sardines on sourdough, chicken schnitzel baguette, and tuna Nicoise salad to name just a few. Oh, and did I mention the shoestring fries with piri piri aioli? Delish!

And just like every good pub, there are some fantastic weeknight deals. Whether you're up for Tuesday Trivia, Wine Wednesday, or Thursday Date Night, there will be something to tickle your little fancy. And, functions, word on the street is that they're top notch at these too. With three function rooms to choose from, The Alliance caters to up to a whoppin' 300 people. Now, that's a party.

In a nutshell, The Alliance has well and truly knocked it out of the park. It's the classic old pub experience on steroids. You'll be thanking me.
