Listen up, Ghibli nerds. This August we’re getting a nationwide showcase called Celebrating Studio Ghibli—a month-long program that’ll see screenings of all 22 Ghibli movies (along with special behind-the-scenes docos and short features) pop-up in cinemas all over the country.
That’s everything from Howl’s Moving Castle and Ponyo to Miyazaki’s early stuff like Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind and Laputa: Castle in the Sky. Whatever your Ghibli poison, you’ll be able to get a double dose in August.
This is good news, especially after the last few years. In 2014, rumours that Japanese animation powerhouse Studio Ghibli was closing down sent the internet into a panic-stricken nostalgia spiral. Thankfully those rumours, like most internet rumours, turned out to be wrong. In fact, director Hayao Miyazaki announced early this year that he’s coming out of retirement to pick up his fabled pencil and sculpt another whimsical Ghibli masterpiece. Booyeah.
Hardcore Ghibli fans will want to check those out; they’re probably your best chance to get an up-close look at Miyazaki’s handiwork...without having him show up at your house and illustrate a story of your life.
