There’s nothing quite like the smell of sun screen and bug spray to trigger mass migration to the coast. Summertime is our cue to fill up the tank, load up on car snacks and take a drive to our fave beach haunt, and to kick it back to neutral for a few days.

If you’re taking a drive south, cross the border to Byron Bay and make a beeline for Byron Bay Brewery where the beers are chilled and the food is well worth the drive.

A Byron Bay icon, and one of the original breweries coming out of this idyllic coastal town, Byron Bay Brewery is the perfect stop-off for a lazy afternoon-turned-evening get together, beer in hand, burger in face.

It has a vivid history, namely for its rep as one of the most famous live music venues throughout the 80’s and 90’s; everyone from Crowded House to The Ramones have played here. For this reason alone, the place has some serious street credentials. And we haven’t even gotten to the beer yet.

The brewery cooks up some fine in-house brews, plus the master brewer has a penchant for a larger or two (who knew?), while also pouring probably the perfect cloudy pale lager—aptly named ‘the hazy one’— for a decent arvo session out on the back deck. If you’re particularly indecisive when choosing a beverage (trust us, we’ve been there) then their ‘pony round’ (a flight of four brews of your choice) is your saviour.

If you happen to take your drinks out to the deck, you’ll find it difficult to leave; from the giant old tree to the pretty pastel coloured picnic tables (plus that annoyingly perfect weather Byron just happens to get), the brewery’s casual outdoor area is full of Byron charm.

Not to be overshadowed by the cracking beers on tap, Byron Bay Brewery’s menu is equally satisfying; think share plates of charred corn with paprika and manchego, popcorn with bacon salt and sticky lamb ribs. For more substantial dishes, try the slow-cooked pork belly with apple slaw and caramel chilli, or the ‘special’ burger (that we hear is so popular it’s getting a permanent spot on the menu). Stuffed with a beef pattie, a fried egg, French fries, crispy bacon, cheese and special sauce, how can you say no to that?

Whether you’re road-tripping down the east coast, or just looking for somewhere to eat, drink and chill with your besties, you’d be off to a flying start at this charming little brewery.
