9 Awesome Things To Do In Brisbane This Weekend

By Shannon Coward - 11 May 2017

Mother’s Day isn’t the only big Brisbane event this weekend. Brisbane has a slew of activities to pad out your weekend plans, and some of them happen to be totally mum-friendly—win win! We’re talking game-show inspired fun runs, the 2017 iteration of fave Brisbane laneway fest, Fish Lane Festival and world-friendly eats galore at Brisbane’s very own vegan market.

All you have to do is round up your favourite people and figure out how you’re possibly going to hit every entry on this list. Our advice? Skip the shut eye—napping is for people who aren’t going to have a killer weekend (aka total losers).

Here are 9 awesome things to do this weekend in Brisbane.

Thursday 11th May

I Am Heath Ledger Screening

One of the greatest actors of our generation, this poignant and deely moving documentary 'I Am Heath Ledger', celebrates the life of an Aussie icon. Shot using his own video camera, get a first-hand look into what made the man tick, what he loved and some incredible interviews with his family. Keep the tissues handy for this one.

When: Thursday 11th–13th May, various screenings
Where: New Farm Six Cinemas

Friday 12th May

Pop Up Art Show at Paper Moon

Paper Moon Functions & Coffee House has done it again with their signature BYO Friday Dinner. This weekend’s edition includes smooth tunes from Lyre, a duet between His Merry Men members Lachlan Bell and Megan Crocombe, and a pop up art show from Ruby Hooper and Megan Gilbert. Rumour has it that everyone’s favourite food truck, Wild Spice Kitchen, will also be making an appearance with a special dinner menu exclusive to the event. Killer gourmet salads AND wine? Sign us the heck up!

When: Friday 12th May, 5:00pm–8:00pm
Where: Paper Moon Functions & Coffee House, Annerley

Saturday 13th May

ROC Race 2017

Dream of being a contestant on a game show? Now’s your chance to make that dream came true. The Ridiculous Obstacle Challenge 5k (ROC Race) is back in Brisbane this Saturday and the organisers are not messing around when it comes to challenges to conquer. We’re talking wrecking balls (Miley Cyrus not included), the terror-inducing Leap of Faith and a truly epic finish line down a four-story tall waterslide. And it’s all inspired by those wacky game shows that we somehow end up binge watching whenever they’re on TV. Do it, love it, thank us later. You’re welcome, friends.

When: Saturday 13th May, 7:00am–6:00pm
Where: Brisbane Showgrounds

Fish Lane Festival 2017

Bringing together the crème de la crème of Brisbane’s local music, dining and bar community, Fish Lane Festival is a one day only event you just can’t miss. Think gourmet dishes from all your favourite Fish Lane eateries, three stages of live music and DJs and pop-ups from some fine purveyors of alcoholic beverages. Do you want to know the best part? Entry to the festival is totally free, meaning you’ve got more cash to splash on a feast to remember. We’re drooling just thinking about it.

When: Saturday 13th May, 12:00pm–10:00pm
Where: Fish Lane, South Brisbane.

Peking Duk Clowntown Tour

First bursting onto the stage in 2014 with smash hits High (featuring Nicole Miller) and Take Me Over (featuring Safia), Peking Duk quickly solidified themselves as local musical legends. Now the duo is heading to Brisbane for a one night only show at The Tivoli as part of their Clowntown Tour. With support by Ivan Ooze and Mallrat, this show is sure to cure any lingering bitterness about not being able to hit up Coachella this year (or any year, actually).

When: Saturday 13th May, 7:30pm–11:59pm
Where: The Tivoli

Sunday 14th May

Americana Sunday Sessions At The Triffid

Americana charm is coming to The Triffid this month and there’ll be a few epic southern-inspired cocktails to match. The session will kick off each Sunday at 2pm in the garden and you can expect entertainment from the likes of Phil Smith, Mexico City and Fanny Lumsden (depending on which week you head down).  For drinks, you’ll struggle to choose between the whiskey apple and the Wild Turkey Gold Rush cocktail, which is basically a whiskey sour with sweet, sweet honey.  Once the live music wraps up at 4pm, the afternoon will kick it up a gear, with live DJ sets.

When: Sunday 7 – Sunday 28 May
Where: The Triffid, 9 Stratton St, Newstead

Vegan Markets

What Mother’s day would be complete without a family trip to the iconic Brisbane Vegan Markets. Held on the corner of Russell Street and Boundary Street, this celebration of all things planet-loving will feature mouth-watering vegan street food, stalls selling cruelty free fashion and cosmetics, and even a kids corner to keep the little ones entertained while you sustainably shop ‘til you drop. Did anyone say vegan mac and cheese? Yes. Please.

When: Sunday 14th May, 9:00am–3:00pm
Where: Corner of Russell and Boundary Streets, West End
For more information, click here.

The Evil Within Premiere Screening

A labour of love from the late Andrew Getty, whose story serves as part cautionary tale and part inspiring DIY triumph, The Evil Within is a quirky film to be sure. Telling the story of a man with learning difficulties who commits gruesome murders at the behest of his evil reflection in the mirror (because when are sentient reflections ever not evil), The Evil Within is dark, twisted and completely unmissable. The Brisbane premiere will take place on Sunday as part of Monster Pictures’ annual genre film festival, Monster Fest. Grab the squad, order your choc tops and settle in for a truly haunting afternoon.

When: Sunday 14th May, 2:00pm –4:00pm
Where: Event Cinemas Myer Centre, Brisbane CBD
