Step aside Valley-loving hipster-wannabes, there’s a new spot in town that is quenching the thirst of real night-time revellers. Yes, the Brisbane CBD now has its very own underground dive bar, and she’s a beaut’.
Hidden among the bustling streets of Brisbane’s corporate laneways lies the late-night, rebellious younger sister venue of beloved Brisbane bar, Lefty’s Old Time Music Hall, Sonny’s—a Brisbane dive bar with serious party chops and a bar menu that’s worth waiting up for.
Tucked down a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it laneway, Sonny’s has been shaking up the CBD bar scene since she opened last year. With a take-it-or-leave-it attitude, Sonny’s has quickly become the spot to let your hair down—best leave all your airs and graces at the door…
Open late (as in, AM late), Sonny’s is owning the underground bar scene in Brisbane. Deep leather booths line one side of the bar—perfect for tucking into a feed and chilling with a cocktail or two (or three…)—while the stage sits across the room, with live jazz, rock and blues bands playing almost every night of the week.
It goes without saying that Sonny’s is earning its stripes as a cracking live music venue, but it’s definitely worth coming by before (or even after) a set for some of the best comfort food this side of the Atlantic.
With heroes like meat loaf sandwiches, and potato gems up for grabs (hello, carbs), we’re already mentally undressing the menu, but where else in Brisbane can you order frozen margaritas, and chomp into a burger called an ‘eggslut’ without batting an eyelid we ask! FYI, the eggslut is a daring combo of fried egg, sriracha mayo, spring onion and spam (yes, spam). It’s a little bit dirty but trust us, you’re going to need to try it!
If a bar could represent the changes in the Brisbane bar scene, Sonny’s pretty much sums it up. Brisbane has finally come of age, and she’s ready to party hard.
