Jumpers and Jazz Festival

By Sophia McMeekin - 14 Jun 2013

Keen for a country escape and a break from the big city lights? We may have the perfect destination. How does this sound? Damper, mulled wine, fondue, bonfires, hot chocolate, winter stews, quirky textile art exhibitions and jazz. Pretty good, right? Well, Urban Listers, get ready for a whole week of this wintery wonder-land, when Warwick holds its 10th annual Jumpers and Jazz festival in July.

This is one of Queensland's most iconic winter festivals which extends over ten days from 18th to 28th July, including two blockbuster weekends. Whether you are after the ideal romantic couples retreat or family country adventure, this festival is fun for all ages. Just two hours from Brisbane, pop into town and witness the charming little community of Warwick come together for this laid-back, super friendly festival.

You may be wondering where the 'jumpers' part comes in. (And, no, it's not just because the Jumpers and Jazz crew advise that you bring one). For the week of the festival, more than 100 of the town's trees are coated in a dazzling, snuggly array of jumpers, knitted and crafted just for them! These art installations, encompassing knitting, crotchet, felting, and weaving are on display throughout the entire festival.

Here are our top picks of this cute and arty festival's many events:

Just 20 mins south east of Warwick, the Killarney Bonfire Night (on Saturday the 20th) will feature a giant bonfire, decorated fire drums, live band and fireworks, perfect for keeping you cosy on the polocrosse fields. And, because what you really need when you're cold is hot chocolate, the community are putting on a fab' spread of mulled wine, damper, stew, fondue, and best of all, hot chocolates. BYO marshmallows.

On Sunday morning on 21 July, the Grand Vintage Car Display will see around 100 vintage MGs, Chevs, Pontiacs, Model T Fords, and other yesteryear vehicles crank their engines and carburettors in Warwick's main street.

The Saturday Stroll n' Swing on the 27th of July is the perfect chance to appreciate some jazz, enjoy country style shopping or Suitcase Rummage markets rove the abundance of textile art or damper tasting and shearing at The Sheep Shack. With art dotted around the township on street corners, best wear your walking shoes, grab a hot drink and get strolling.

The Sunday Picnic in the Park, on July the 28th is sure to attract locals and visitors all heading to Warwick's Leslie Park for a fabulous day of wine sampling, jazz, craft markets, lounging on picnic blankets and chairs in the winter sun.

The Jumpers and Jazz festival calendar is positively bursting with events, dinners, jazz nights, bonfires, and craft workshops, so if you would like to stay in town, be sure to book accommodation, as spots always fill up fast. Or, alternatively, you can really grab the season by the horns and go camping.  To make the most of the Killarney Bonfire Night, Killarney View Cabins & Caravan Park or the Queen Mary Falls Caravan Park & Cabins offer camping grounds where fire pits will ensure you make it through the chilly nights snug-as-a-bug.  Or, if you would like to base yourself in or close to 'festival central', Warwick, try Kahler's Oasis Caravan Park.
