For the Love of Beer

By Kim Barnard - 13 May 2012

You could be forgiven for thinking that a bar dedicated to selling craft beers might be a little intimidating.

Not so at Park Road's The Scratch. In fact, this new, boutique beer bar is far from it. Created by three mates who classify themselves as 'beer nerds', this West-side gem is ready to welcome all and sundry with open arms.

With a focus on serving and sourcing great quality, independent and artistic beers, The Scratch is bringing the love back to beer drinking in a big way. Every beer has a story, and the uber-friendly staff are skilled in educating and inspiring customers, without a hint of pretension or snobbery.

There are beers to suit everyone from the steadfast lager-drinker to the more adventurous customer. Fancy a beer brewed with a chicken carcass in the fermentation? Try the aptly-named Cock Ale. Or, if you prefer something sweet, the Crème Brulee beer might be the way to go.

A beer virgin? No problem. I am assured that the team can find an ale for every palate. In fact, I am told that converting a non-beer drinker, and serving them something they enjoy, is one of the best parts of the job.

And if you're a bit peckish? Pack a lunch! Or better yet, The Scratch team will recommend something yummy from one of the many local restaurants, to be enjoyed with a beer at the bar. That's right – The Scratch is BYO food! Or, if a light nosh is all you're after, the boys can whip up a cheese platter to share.

The Scratch is open seven days a week (yes, even Monday!) from midday to midnight.
