It’s no secret we Aussies love partying at Oktoberfest in Munich–there’s always a massive contingent representing Down Under at the super-fun annual Germanic festival. But even if work, family commitments and/or an unco-operative bank balance are getting in the way of flitting to Europe to consume your weight in beer this October, here’s a (much more convenient) chance to rock some lederhosen while you eat, drink and be merry.
As well as making its name as a super-slick shopping and dining destination, Westfield Chermside has proved it also knows how to throw a damn good party. Oktoberfest Chermside is set to be no different: this free, three-day version of the Bavarian food, drink and fun-fest will be an extravaganza of food stalls, pop-up bars, free rides, super-cool sideshow games and live entertainment, all in a buzzing, carnival-style atmosphere.
One of the precinct’s outdoor carparks will be transformed into a full Oktoberfest-style fiesta, with festoon lighting, hay bales, German beer tables, keg stands, and mouth-watering food and drink stalls from some of your fave Westfield Chermside eateries. Think two types of pork belly sliders from Grill’d (and of course their legendary thick-cut chips with dips); saucy wings, Champion cheese and bacon burgers, German hotdogs with sauerkraut, mustard, bacon and relish, and choc-top waffle cones from The Sporting Globe; and delish grab 'n' go eats like prawns, schnitties, salads and fish 'n' chips from Beach House Bar & Grill. Also popping up to cater to all of your hunger needs will be Asian fusion eatery Sate House and espresso experts Stellarossa serving signature faves all weekend long.
And of course, it wouldn’t be Oktoberfest without sampling all of the beer. Take your pick of pop-up bars serving bubbly cold ones to wash down all that food, like the Stone & Wood bar to go with your Grill’d; Coors and little Bull at The Sporting Globe; and an array of Yak ales from The Beach House’s stall. Not a fan of the froffies? Not to worry, there’ll also be the likes of G&Ts and Pimm’s to drink in your dirndl.
Adding to the fairground atmosphere will be live music and entertainment (including traditional German acts), and what's got to be the cutest competitive sport going: dachshund races! (We cannot wait to watch those little sausages run...) Plus, the kids will be all over the next-level free activities and awesome carnival rides while you enjoy a few bevvies, like a giant slide, giant Gravitron, giant jumping castle and face painting. You won't be able to resist trying to beat the family at the uber-fun old-school sideshow games including laughing clowns, pluck-a-duck, and balloon busters.
It’s Oktoberfest, Aussie-style, which at the end of the day, is still all about eating, drinking and dancing–and we’re always down for that in any language!
