It's mid-November in the land of Oz and the working year is winding down: uni exams are wrapping up, work is winding down (err, okay not quite), and the Christmas holidays are so tantalisingly close you can almost taste the days of freedom.

To ease you into the impending festive season, Brisbane's got plenty of fantastic distractions, including a bunch of fresh events to keep you occupied this weekend. So without further ado here are our top 13 things to keep you busy this weekend in Brisbane:

All Weekend

Floressence 2017

Floressence is the annual botanical art exhibition held in the auditorium of the Botanical Gardens every November, and will take you straight from the beauty of the botanical gardens to the stunning impressions of our local flora. It gives you the unique opportunity to observe botanical artists at work, learn about the artform and the plants themselves, and even walk home with whichever piece catches your eye.

Palestinian Film Festival

The Palestinian Film Festival is hitting James Street and we're all in for an enriching weekend at the movies. The festival aims to promote Palestinian arts and culture in the diverse multicultural context that is Australia. There will be three feature films and two shorts played over the three-day run, each carefully picked to show the very best in the Palestinian film scene. Grab some popcorn and get some culture in you!

Queensland Beer Festival

Woolly Mammoth will be letting the taps flow this Thursday with the launch of Queensland Beer Week. Showcasing over 60 craft beers there will be plenty of never-before-tasted brews just waiting for your refined palate to assess. Book tickets online if you are interested in the Guide and Tasting package which includes four tasters and the Craft Beer Guide to Queensland. For the rest of you who are just keen for a good pint the entry is free and the brewskis will be flowing!

Jamie’s Ministry Of Food

Do you want to learn how to cook like Jamie Oliver? Jamie’s Ministry of Food Mobile Kitchen is setting up shop in Mount Gravatt to share Jamie’s tips and tricks for creating great food at every meal. The mobile kitchen is fully stocked and provides practical cooking classes to people across Queensland. His goal is to inform people about healthy choices and create happy, healthy communities across the world. Book now and get cooking because they are only staying around for a few weeks!

CRE8 2017

Looking for some creative inspiration to recharge you through the rest of 2017? Look no further than CRE8 2017. TAFE Queensland is throwing a festival to celebrate all the homegrown talents of student artists, chefs, designers, florists, musicians, gamers, and every other creative developer you can think of. Enjoy a night of food stalls, live music, street art, performances, and interactive displays in a celebration of local budding greatness.

Friday 17th November

Let’s Get It On | Songs By Marvin Gaye

Nathaniel Willemse will be live this Friday night at Hamilton Hotel, and he will be singing the story of how musical legend Marvin Gaye helped shape the sound of Motown. Let Nathaniel’s angelic pipes guide you through Gaye’s musical evolution, including his hits such as 'Sexual Healing' and 'Heard It Through The Grape Vine'. Nathaniel's impressive four-octave range is sure to blow you away.

Modern Calligraphy With Xmas Tea

Get into the Christmas spirit with the cutest calligraphy workshop out. Brisbane Pride Inaugural Queer Formal 2017

For all our student readers who weren’t really feeling the vibe of their own senior formals, this event is for you. Brisbane Pride is throwing a formal for all LBGTIQ students and supporters this Friday. This event provides a safe space for LGBTIQ students to bring who they want to their own formal, wear what they want, and be free from judgement. The night is free for all students attending, and if you are a little older and want to help out you can donate the price of a ticket to help make this awesome night happen!

Ironlak Mixed Media

For all the budding artists among you, there is a workshop on this weekend that you won't want to miss. Elana Mullaly, an experienced local art and design artist, will take you through the techniques of creating a mixed media masterpiece. This interactive class will have your artwork leaping off the canvas, adding an extra dimension to your pieces. At the end of the workshop, you will have your own hand-painted work to take with you, as well as new skills to add to your repertoire.

Sunday 19th November

Under The Stars

Book fast, there are only a few spots left at the most extravagant dinner of the year: Chefs in the City—Under the Stars. Showcasing the culinary talents of multiple head chefs, this dinner will feature a seven-course degustation exemplifying the finest Australian dishes of the year. With matched wines and canapés, the evening can only be enhanced by the beautiful setting: the enchanting Spicers Hidden Vale. Watch the sunset views and dine, wine in hand, under the stars.

Brisbane’s Biggest Clothing Garage Sale

This all ages, free event will add a plethora of fantastic colours, fabrics, and textures to your life through the medium of clothes, glorious clothes. This monthly event is a marketplace of forgotten treasures from some of Brisbane's hippest wardrobes. As with past events, a live DJ will provide the soundtrack to the most epic clothes hunt in the city. Search through rack after rack to find those hidden gems to walk home with and expand your wardrobe in an economically and environmentally responsible way.

Thanksgiving Dinner at Lester & Earl

You don’t have to be American to celebrate Thanksgiving this year, with Lester & Earl throwing an epic pop-up event that’ll leave you feeling truly thankful (and full!). So, if you can’t wait ‘til Christmas to get your turkey and cranberry fix, then this star-spangled shindig is where you need to be this Sunday November 26th . There’ll be a BBQ serving up smoked turkey legs, bourbon-drenched wings and the freshest Wild Turkey drinks this side of the border. Live music kicks off at 2pm, so get there early, stake out a spot and get ready to unbutton those pants post feed.

Community Champions

If you have ever watched any American sitcom, you are bound to feel both bemused by and jealous of Thanksgiving. Thankfully, Newstead Brewing Co. has decided that we Aussies have a lot to be thankful for too, and are holding a celebration for just that. Enjoy quality food, great company, and a range of 32 beers on tap as you hear about the community's latest projects and how to support those in need. Hot Chicks With Big Brains Issue 4 Launch Party

If feminist journals are your jam, then you've gotta get around Hot Chicks With Big Brains. As the name suggests, this Brisbane-based periodical is run by a dedicated band of badasses, and is curated for women who work. This November heralds the launch of their latest issue as well as the unveiling of a whole new design, and to celebrate, they're throwing a big ole shindig at the Josephmark office. The event will be BYO, so feel free to bring a slab and share the love, and copies of the piping hot Issue 4 will be available for purchase. Don't despair if you can't make it, you can nab your copy from their website, and anyone craving an aural component should check out their Screen Queens podcast with Damian Maher.
