Welcome to March—aka the first official day of autumn, Brisbane! All the uni goers are back in class, the weather is stubbornly sticking to its (frustratingly indecisive) contrast of sauna or monsoon, and the city is showing no signs of slowing down—quite the oppostie! 

With some of the best Brisbane events popping up this month, it is time to give up that nasty couch habit. Tear yourself away from your climate controlled comfort and stop hiding from the rain, because Brisbane is pulling out some top tier events this week that are worth braving whatever the weather throws at us! Here are 12 Brisbane events worth leaving the house for this weekend.

Circus Rio

If you were unlucky enough to miss out on Circus Rio when it hit Brisbane back in January, here is your second chance. Head to Mt Gravatt to see a spectacular show featuring aerialists, motor bike stunts, gymnasts, dancing, light displays and so much more. Make sure you book tickets fast because this show is a sure fire sell out!

Thursday 1 March

The Manganiyar Seduction at QPAC

Moving from one visual masterpiece to the next, The Manganiyar Seduction will captivate you as 40 musicians spanning three generations of Manganiyar performers build a stunning musical and visual experience right before your eyes. The show is mesmerising to say the least and will only stick around for two nights, so book tickets fast.

Brisbane Powerhouse is doing a cracker job hosting the Brisbane Comedy Festival, and to celebrate, they are bringing back cheap jokes for all us cheapskates with their free weekly comedy show Knockoff. Featuring local and national talent, stop by the Powerhouse on a Friday arvo for some free laughs to end your work week.

Lunar New Year Rooftop Party

There's nothing like a good old rooftop party to wrap up the Lunar New Year. Stop by Sunnybank Plaza’s Asian Laneway pop-up this Saturday, which will include an art gallery, percussion workshops, beauty salon, lantern making, and a games den. PopAsia’s Andy Trieu will be hosting the evening which will finish up with a Studio Ghibli film screening and fireworks display.

Wine Meats Cheese

Wine. Meat. Cheese. If you aren’t already hooked, then we have nothing more to say. Gerard’s Bar will be hosting a scrumptious evening that celebrates natural, organic, biodynamic, and vegan wine for you to taste all afternoon. The tickets will not only grant you tipples of plenty of fantastic drops, but it will be accompanied by cheese and cured meats. Cheers to that!

Full Moon Party

Because who needs a better excuse for a night out that the presence of a full moon? Stop by the Shadow Lounge this Saturday night for the best view of the moon in all of Brisbane, plus ringside seats to the live jet ski and fireworks shows. If the entertainment isn’t enough to convince you, there will also be Thai Bucket Cocktails and canapes as part of their 2-hour food and beverage package. When the words ‘cocktail’ and ‘bucket’ are together, you know it will be a good night.

International Women’s Day High Tea

If you are looking for something more sophisticated for your Saturday afternoon, the ANFE Italian Club will once again be presenting the International Women’s Day High Tea. Spill tea as you sip it, discussing the important issues and obstacles facing women of today while supporting women and children in Cambodia with every finger sandwich. There will be prizes for best dressed and Italian sweets at every turn.

Needing no introduction, we announce that Akmal is hitting the Powerhouse with his stand-up routine for this weekend only as a part of the Brisbane Comedy Festival. Known for hitting the hard topics in a vaguely offensive yet utterly hilarious way, Akmal is one of Australia’s most beloved comics and is returning with his best show yet.

Prestige Champagne Masterclass

If you are feeling especially boujee this weekend, you can’t go past Darling & Co’s Prestige Champagne Masterclass this Saturday afternoon. Hosted by Kyla Kirkpatrick, this event will take you on a luxurious tour of the Prestige Cuvees of Champagne, being the house favourites from Krug, Pol Roger Sir Winston Churchill, Cristal, and more. Hot Dub Wine Machine

The almighty Wine Machine has heard our prayers and is back at O’Reilly’s Winery, sporting a killer chardy and one heck of a line up. Headlining acts are Sneaky Sound System and The Kite String Tangle, plus more Aussie bands and DJs to play you into the night. Yep, awesome Aussie tunes with unlimited wine and picnic platters; we may have just found the ultimate Saturday night.

Watchdog Film Festival

Not sure what to watch for Sunday movie night? Check out the Watchdog Film Festival at The New Globe Theatre. Plus, the cinema has a bar!
