Adios, April: it's been real. The first week of a new month in this town is always cause to dial up your social commitments, and May in Brisbane is no different. This week you can expect everything from a whisky tasting session to a movie premiere screening to a Star Wars themed trivia-come-food-theme night you won’t want to miss.
These are the five things you absolutely have to do this week in Brisbane. It’s a tough job, but someone has to do it.
Tuesday 1 May
You Little Genius
Little Big House is all about going big or going home. What between their adorable cocktails-in-a-can and chicken parmy spring rolls, you never know what those crazy kids are going to think of next. So you can imagine their weekly trivia night, aptly named You Little Genius, is one you won’t want to miss. Taking place every Tuesday night from 6:30pm, You Little Genius will see the crème de la crème of Brisbane’s trivia kings and queens duke it out for some seriously grand prizes. Registration is free and prizes are dished out every round, alongside the coveted gold, silver and bronze winners. Plus, the whole shebang is run by the legends over at Man vs. Bear, so you know you’ll be in good hands. For more information, click here.
Wednesday 2 May
Dolls & Drams At The Gresham
Breaking down stereotypes one smooth sip of whiskey at a time, Dolls & Drams is the place to be this Wednesday night if you enjoy your tipple with a little bit of girl power. All about introducing ladies to the unique taste of top shelf American Whiskey, the night will be hosted by The Gresham superstar, Billie-Jean alongside Carmen of Vanguard Luxury Spirits providing their expert opinion on the golden nectar. A ticket to the event will net you a personal tour of the best of the Michter’s whiskey range and the chance to get to know everything there is to know about American whiskey. Breath Premiere At Dendy Cinemas Portside
The brand new Australian blockbuster based on the beloved Tim Winton novel, Breath is rolling into Dendy Cinemas Portside for a sneaky premiere screening one day earlier than the rest of the nation. Directed by and starring the oh-so-charming Simon Baker, Breath tells the story of two teenagers in WA, looking to escape the monotony of small town life by taking up surfing lessons from a mysterious newcomer by the name of Sando. Beautifully shot and inspiring to boot, this is an Aussie classic in the making—so make sure you catch it on the big screen! For all the details, click here.
Friday 4 May
May The Fritz Be With You | Brews & Trivia
That hallowed time of year is here again, friends, when Star Wars fans unite to celebrate May the fourth. This year, Fritzenberger—the geniuses behind dessert burgers and candied bacon pieves—are coming at you with the biggest and boldest May 4 celebration of the year. We're talking a Star Wars themed trivia night and the unveiling of five (!) limited edition Star Wars-inspired brews (and a weighty burg!) to whet your whistle with. Dark Side of the Fritz and the infamous Star Wars Beer by Bounty Hunter (of which only two kegs will be making it to Queensland for the event) will be being poured on the night. Buddha Birth Day Festival 2018
Attracting over 200,000 visitors each year, the Buddha Birth Day Festival at South Bank is the largest festival of its kind in the world and one of Queensland’s most prestigious cultural events. Spread over three massive days from the 4-6 May, the Buddha Birth Day Festival is the perfect place to take a step back and celebrate Australia’s cultural diversity through a variety of performances and cultural activities. The festival is split up into different sections; each focusing on a particular area. Here’s what we’d do: start at the Wisdom Village to get all your questions about Buddhism answered before heading on over to the International Vegetarian Food village for a mouth-watering lunch that is good for you AND the world. Afterwards, meander your way through the parklands to the Spiritual Village, where you can make a light offering for world peace, before finishing up your day with a good old fashioned guided meditation session at the Meditation Village. Brisbane, you spoil us. For all the details, make sure you check out the official website here.
