THINGS-TO-DO-IN-brisbane

Earlier this week it dawned on us that Christmas is really quite soon. So soon in fact that if you thought you’d leave something until later, later has arrived. Amongst the ensuing frenzy of shopping, gift-wrapping, lunch prepping, fam dodging, and tying up of loose admin ends before everywhere shuts down for the holidays, see if you can winkle out enough time to let your hair down and have a bit of a laugho. It’s the frickin’ reason for the season.

Check out this Christmas-themed edition of everything popping off this weekend in Brisbane.

Thursday 21st December

Christmas Wreath Workshop At Soul Pantry

If your current wreath is a natty mess of broken twigs and missing baubles, pay attention. In the last few days before Christmas, Soul Pantry’s floral geniuses have decided to save our front doors, hosting a 90-minute masterclass on how to weave your own festive wreath. All materials will be provided, and participants will even get a 15% discount off their next visit to the verdant wicker pavilion that is Soul Pantry.

Where: Soul Pantry, Stafford
When: 10.30am
Cost: Tickets $79, book here.

Love Actually At The Elizabeth Picture Theatre

If you haven’t made it to the brand-new Elizabeth Picture Theatre, I can’t think of any better reason to check it out than a seasonal screening of Love Actually. There’s so much going on here: first, there’s the glorious theatre herself with her foxy stained-glass windows and plush foyer harkening to a bygone era; and second, there’s the tear-jerking magic of everyone’s favourite Christmas rom-com. As if that wasn’t enough, every ticket comes with a mince pie and a cup of mulled wine.

Where: Elizabeth Picture Theatre, CBD
When: 6.30pm-9:00pm
Cost: $25. Buy tickets here.

Friday 22nd December

Summer Solstice: A Midsummer Night Gypsy Festival

If you feel stifled by the commercialisation of Judeo-Christian culture, get down with the druids at the Midsummer Night Gypsy Festival to celebrate the summer solstice. Hosted by the Village of Light Association, this cosmic fiesta is motivated by will feature a maker’s market, food stalls, live music, activities like mandala drawing, and (naturally) a ritual for the summer solstice. Because the longest day of the year just means more time to drink in that sweet, sweet vitamin D. Check out the events page for more details.

Where: Northey Street City Farm, Windsor
When: 6.00pm-10.30pm
Cost: Tickets $12 if booked online, or $20 at the door.

Doo-Bop’s Christmas Concert

Doo-Wop is rounding out the festive season with a live jazz bash that’ll stick it to primary school carols. Led by Peter Cupples, the show will kick off at 7.30pm and feature a bunch of special guests from the world of jazz. Doo-Bop’s basement menu will be available, as well as their full array of drinks from the downstairs bar which will be open and pouring until 3am.

Where: Doo-Wop Jazz Bar, CBD
When: 7.30pm
Cost: Tickets from $25, available here

Super Whatnot’s Sixth Birthday

Can you bloody believe it’s been six years? Super Whatnot is old enough to go to school and we think that’s worth celebrating. Come down this Friday, on the eve of the eve of Christmas and enjoy the best of Burnett Lane’s best music bar. They’ll be celebrating with sounds from a bunch of their favourite DJs, as well as all their usual offerings of sip and yums. Check out their social for more info on who to expect on the decks.

Christmas Swing At Black Bear Lodge

The lesser-honoured Christmas Eve Eve is going off at Black Bear Lodge with the musical stylings of the Rhythm Society Dance Orchestra. The set list will include the hits of Glenn Miller, Harry James, Artie Shaw, Benny Goodman and Tommy Dorsey, a perfect, jiving soundtrack to get you on your feet and grooving on the last Saturday night before Christmas. A must for hardcore swingers.
