The only thing scarier than Halloween is the knowledge that Christmas is only two months away (we're sorry to bring it up). In case you missed it, the last week of October is already here, but don’t start unpacking your tinsel too soon!

This weekend in Brisbane is all about grizzly ghouls and ghastly ghosts, with some fantastic cultural events thrown in for good measure. Hold on to your broomsticks because here are our all the best things to do in Brisbane this weekend!

The Good Food & Wine Show

The Good Food & Wine Show is back in Brisbane and cooking up a storm this weekend in Brisbane. Showcasing the freshest, tastiest, and most innovative foods from around the world you will be in foodie heaven as you wander through the stalls and stalls of goodies. Enjoy everything from wine tastings and champagne high tea to the world’s best pizza and an entire alley dedicated to cheese!

Japanese Film Festival 2017

For fans of Japanese cinema, this weekend in Brisbane is heaven. The Japanese Film Festival is back in town, showing the freshest cinematic works of art that Japan has to offer. Don’t worry; there will be plenty of classics screened too. JFF will be screening everything from melodrama to absurdist manga for you to feast your eyes on this weekend at Brisbane Myer Centre.

Cirque Africa

This underground acrobatic school turned international phenomenon is tearing its way through Australia. Cirque Africa is the first ever all African circus in the world, and they are hitting Aus for the first time, touring to our major cities for the next three years. Expect breathtaking acrobatic performances taking you on a journey through Africa throughout the two-hour performance.

Brisbane Ghost Tours

Ah Halloween, such a beautiful time. The weather is heating up, holidays are approaching, what better way to celebrate than to scare ourselves senseless? Ghost Tours Australia is bringing out the classics this Halloween weekend, hosting ghost tours of all Brisbane’s most notorious locations. We’re talking all the gruesome details behind Toowong Cemetery, Boggo Road Gaol, Ipswich Cemetery, and the CBD, among others. Learn the creepiest details of our fair town; the tours kick off on Thursday.

James Street has brought back RESORT for its fourth installment (YAS!) to cap off October with an urban symposium. Bringing us a slice of Ancient Greece, RESORT 2017 will celebrate James Street’s representation of fashion, lifestyle, art, and design. With forums, presentations, and discussions to participate in there will even be an in-house philosopher to help you ponder the time honoured questions of our generation, such as ‘Should I take selfies?’ and ‘What if the dress was both black and blue AND white and gold?’.

Valley Fiesta

Brisbane’s biggest free music festival, Valley Fiesta will be kicking off this Friday—woohoo! Celebrating their 21st year, this year's festival packs a punch, with free shows from various artists, plenty of great food, and awards to recognise some of Brissy’s best emerging talent. Watch out for Chinatown Mall’s transformation as it showcases cultural performances from around the globe.

Halloween Horror Movie Marathon

Is there a better way of celebrating this night of nights than with a good old-fashioned scare-arathon? Err, that would be no! Metro Arts are going old school with a movie marathon for the history books. First up will be Night of the Living Dead, followed by Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and capped off with Bride of Re-Animator. Prepare for buckets of fake blood, hectic effects, and nothing more recent than 1989. Pure cinematic gold!

Calexico Man Launches

One of Brisbane's most iconic independent fashion boutiques (it's where half our pay check seem to disappear every month...), Calexico has only gone and given the boys somewhere to drop their hard-earned dollies; enter, Calexico Man—Brisbane's newest menswear boutique! To celebrate, they've teamed up with local artist Jake Reston as part of James Street’s RESORT festival. Reston will be in-store installing a live art mural, and the first 200 customers in store on the day receive a free print with purchase. Neat!

Game Over Halloween Party

1UP Arcade is hitting us hard in the 90s feels with their retro arcade Halloween party. Leave all thoughts of your ps4 behind and take it back to the days of Tekken, Bomber Man, and Ghosts ‘n Goblins (if you remember that one, I feel your pain) where you can get sucked into the vortex of ‘just one more game!’ all over again. There will be entry for only $15 to play all day, live DJ on the night, and a $150 cash prize for best Cosplay.

Oktoberfest Closing Party 

If you are desperately searching for one last Oktoberfest fix to tide you over until next year, don’t worry—Bavarian Bier Café has you covered! Join them for their epic wrap up party this weekend, kicking off with Hoppy Hour for you to drink your weight's worth of $10 500ml steins for an entire hour. Triple M legend Greg Martin wil rock up from 6pm for the final keg tap and sausage eating contest, and the oompah party will carry on until late to give the 2017 Oktoberfest its last hurrah!

It's official: lederhosen are out and puppies are IN to cap off October with Barktoberfest! Carseldine Markets is holding a pet’s-day-out complete with everything your furry friend will love. There will be pop up stalls, live music and entertainment, gourmet food, jumping castles (no claws allowed I’m afraid), and petting zoos. On top of all that there will be a ‘Pawparazzi’ contest (hehe… get it?) and a dog adoption zone sponsored by the Animal Welfare League. Day made!

IMA Annual Party

Brisbane’s Institute of Modern Art is throwing their epic annual party this weekend and you are invited. This year, though, IMA are kicking it up a notch with a theme to get you going: come dressed to impress as your fave artist or artwork and have the chance to win prizes for best dressed. On top of this, entry is free, Ben’s burgers will be cooking up a storm, and you will be greeted with a complimentary beverage!

Newstead will be making us sweat this Sunday with the first ever Sweat Social Sweatathlon! Stop by trendy boutique studios F45 Training, InspireCycle, and Harlow Hot Yoga & Pilates for three intense classes one right after the other and get your sweat on. Need an incentive? Tatty Superfoods will be handing out acai bowls to help your recovery, and you will also walk away with a free goodie bag packed full of fitness giveaways—score!
