The Splendour revellers are back, mud-encrusted and exhausted, and uni is back in full swing. Some might say that’s bleak, but they haven’t yet been alerted to the light at the end of this week’s tunnel. Don’t despair—go towards it. It’s shining bright, beckoning you to come and enjoy all the wonderful festivities on offer around town. And, boy, are there some things going down! Here is what’s on in Brisbane this weekend.

Thursday 30th July

James St Food & Wine Trail | James St

If you go down to the woods today, you’re sure of a big surprise. And by woods, I mean James St, and by surprise I’m actually lying because I’m telling you right now what’s going down. It’s the James St Food & Wine Trail! The three-day culinary affair kicks off on Thursday with cooking classes galore—perfect your Thai dishes with James St Cooking School and pasta art with Angelo’s Authentic Pasta Class, and learn all the secrets of the strip’s favourite Italian haunt with Bucci’s Masterclass. Friday sees the OzHarvest Soup Kitchen popping up and evil burger genius Daniel Wilson of Huxtaburger fame teaming up with Harveys Bar and Bistro for an exclusive 5-course dinner. It all culminates on Saturday with a teddy bear picnic of grand proportions. Yes, The famous Urban Picnic is back, so I would advise fasting for the next three days to make sure you can consume all of the food. It’s going to be good, Brisbane. Real good.

Where: James Street, New Farm
When: Thursday 30 July – Saturday 1 August

Friday 31st July

Christmas in July | Riverside Centre

For all the lols that confusing our Northern Hemisphere counterparts by singing about dashing through the bush in a rusty Holden ute brings, Australia’s lack of white Christmas really gets to me sometimes. Luckily, the brains behind some of Brisbane’s best eateries are trying to rectify the situation and provide you with the opportunity to experience not one but TWO rocking Christmases this year. Behold: Christmas in July presented by Riverside Centre. Get ready for the CBD to be transformed into a winter wonderland and indulge in some festive fare from Black Bird Bar & Grill, Friday’s, Jellyfish, Navala Churrascaria, Pig n Whistle, The George Bar and The Groove Train. Mix things up and start (not end) your night at Friday’s with a Christmas-themed cocktail, before tucking in to roast turkey with all the trimmings at the Pig n Whistle. The George is plating up slow roasted lamb shoulder and egg nog, and The Groove Train will give you your dessert fix with their decadent wood-fired banana and Kahlua calzone.

Where: Riverside Centre. 123 Eagle Street, Brisbane CBD

Swiss National Day | Mövenpick

FREE ICE CREAM. I’m sorry, I really tried to write an intelligible opening line, but excitement took over. Anyway, all you need to know is that the land of watches, Roger Federer and neutral political positions is celebrating its National Day on Saturday, and instead of getting inappropriately inebriated like, um, some countries, they are celebrating with FREE ICE CREAM. Mövenpick will be scooping out free cups of creamed ice goodness until 2 pm or for the first 250 customers in each store, whichever comes first. So, HURRY. There’s no time for breakfast when there’s FREE ICE CREAM to be had!
