You wouldn’t know it from the recent FREAKING COLD WEATHER and out-of-the-blue hectic hail storms we’ve been having, but month one of spring is over. September has left the building and October is upon us, and luckily it seems to be bringing a fresh batch of sunshine for the long weekend! There’s plenty to see and do over the Labour Day weekend, so it’s time to celebrate. We’ve got you covered for the best things to do in Brisbane!
Thursday 1 October
October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, and Racecourse Road is getting in. to. it. The strip will be transformed into a pink visual masterpiece with six THOUSAND metres of satin ribbon decorating the tree-lined street. Local businesses will be getting involved all throughout October, with a whole bunch of fundraising events going down. Their aim is to raise $10,000 for the Mater Chicks in Pink, so get down and get on board with some of the following: the Pink’ed UP Eagle Farm Markets on the 4th, jumble sale at St Augustines on the 7th, Blessing of the Pets at St Augustines on the 11th (dress up your dogs in pink tutus for a bit of fundraising fun), the Pink’ed UP Faire at St Augustines on the 17th, and a fundraising breakfast at Vagelis Café on the 28th.

AFL Grand Final
Footy has us well and truly feverish this weekend, with the AFL grand final going down on Saturday and the all-Queensland NRL grand final on Sunday. If you’re into watching the Hawks-Eagles showdown with company, head on down to Hotel LA on Saturday.

Relish Food and Wine Festival
Baysiders will relish the fact this food and wine festival is on this weekend! Sorry, that was a terrible pun, but I can guarantee this will NOT be a terrible event! The day will showcase the best local and international produce that the Redlands region has to offer, including fresh seafood, paddock to plate fruit and vegetables and award winning wines. There will be a cooking demonstration by Wellington Point local and MasterChef 2015 contestant Georgia Barnes, as well as a series of pop-up bars and extensions operation for the day. There will be live music, entertainment and a whole heap of activities for the whole family!

NRL Grand Final
History is made today, with the first ever all-Queensland NRL grand final! The Cowboys and the Broncs are going head-to-head, and there are a whole bunch of places you can head to watch the big game. Brisbane’s home of footy celebrations, The Caxton, will (OBVIOUSLY) be screening the game, and are putting on an event hosted by Nova’s Luttsy and former NRL superstar Scott Prince. Up the road, Hotel LA are putting on a do, with live entertainment from 3pm and Corona specials, competitions and giveaways. The Stock Exchange are also celebrating the biggest date in the footy calendar, with tables available for booking to watch on their huge screen and brand new high definition TVs. The Prince of Wales Hotel in Nundah are setting up their screen and offering up the chance to win an all-inclusive food and beverage package fit for a king. You’ll get your own couch right in front of the screen, with food and drink delivered right to your table!

Brisbane Mango Auction
It’s that time of the year again! Mangoes are BACK, baby! The beginning of our favourite season (stonefruit season, obviously) means that once again the Brisbane Mango Auction is on the horizon! Dig deep in to your pockets and bid for the first mango tray of 2015, all in the name of charity. You might want to dig reaallllllyy deep though – last year’s tray went for a whopping $30,000.

Walk For Awareness
Queensland Mental Health Week is next week, and will culminate in the Walk for Awareness on Sunday 11th October. The fundraiser walk is an opportunity for the community to come together in solidarity and show their support of the push to break the taboo of discussing mental health issues, depression and suicide. The 8km course will take you around the Brisbane River and over the Story Bridge, with the initiative aiming to raise enough money to roll out a School Based Awareness Program tackling youth suicide.

Brisbane Open House is back for another cracking year! This is your chance to get a look inside some of Brisbane’s most loved and admired buildings.
