10 Awesome Things To Do This Weekend In Brisbane

By Siobhan Taylor - 12 Jan 2017

things to do Brisbane, what's on Brisbane

The holidays are well and truly over, but don’t lament—the city is back in full swing with a truck load of things to do this weekend in Brisbane. After an over-indulgent, luxurious festive season, the office is feeling a little cramped and dull, which is why we are excited to get out-doors, stretch our tired limbs, and see what’s happening in this great town.

With free yoga classes and park runs you’ll have no difficult sticking to that fitness resolution, trivia and video games are the best way to catch up with friends you might have missed over Christmas, and with another RSPCA Pop-Up Adoption maybe you’ll finally get that four-legged friend you’ve been dreaming of!

Cheers to the new year, and cheers to the weekend; here's what's on in Brisbane this week.

Thursday 12th January

Marvel Vs. DC Trivia

Avengers Assemble! It’s time for another round of trivia at The Brightside, this time testing whether you’re a true Marvel and DC aficionado or just another fanboy. Do you know the real name of the Avenger known as Hawkeye? Or who the first Marvel hero to encounter the Living Tribunal was? What about who Superboy was cloned from? If you can answer any of these questions you’re already doing better than I am.

When: Thursday 12th, 7pm
Where: The Brightside, Fortitude Valley
Details: For more info and to register, click here.

Wine 101 Beginner Class

If you’re looking to impress your in-laws and your friends with your wine knowledge, then read on! Even if you've committed to drinking less in 2017, this class is worth checking out. This month at Grape Therapy the team will walk you through Australian classics, showing you how to expertly pair wine and food at home, as well as how to experience wine with all your senses. Suitable for beginners, this class will have you sipping pretty before you know it. (Tip: don’t mention that you’re the undefeated Goon of Fortune champ in your squad.)

When: Thursday 12th, 6:30pm
Where: Grape Therapy (Adelaide St location)
Details: For tickets and more info, click here.

Hadron Collider Exhibit

If one of your resolutions this year is to learn more about the world around you, then the Queensland Museum has got your back. Until late April, Brisbane will be host to the world-renowned Large Hadron Collider exhibition from London’s Science Museum. I recommend you first watch the documentary Particle Fever (available for streaming on Netflix) for a brief background on the experiment (and a hilarious scene of rapping physicists). My 11th grade self never thought I would be so excited by experimental and theoretical physics...

When: Until 25th April
Where: Queensland Museum
Details: For tickets and info, click here.

Friday 13th January

Australia vs. Pakistan, ODI

It's the first One Day International of the series and cricket's biggest fans are getting their watermelon helmets ready. If you're a serious cricket fan you won't want to miss this. Alternatively, if you're cricket clueless and want to find out what the hype is about, this is an ideal match for a first timer.

When: Friday 13th, 1:20pm
Where: The Gabba
Details: For tickets and info, click here.

Oyster Fridays

Your first week (or two) back at work has undoubtedly been stressful, but with the return of work we also see the return of Friday arvo drinks, and no one does Friday drinks better than Eleven Rooftop Bar. Wind down from the week and kick start your weekend the best way we know how: with fresh-shucked oysters, bubbly champagne, and that gorgeous Brisbane city skyline.

When: Friday 13th, from 4pm
Where: Eleven Rooftop Bar, Fortitude Valley
Details: For info, click here.

Saturday 14th January

RSPCA Pop-Up Adoption

Dogs and puppies, cats and kitties, the RSPCA pop-up adoption is the perfect place to find your new fur-friend. With dogs and cats to suit every lifestyle, you might find yourself heading home with Buster or Daisy or Harry—or maybe all three! Dedicated volunteers and veterinarians will be available to assist you with finding your new pal.

Where: Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre
Details: For info and to pre-register your deatils, click here.

New Farm Park Run

Wanting to exercise more going into the New Year is a respectable resolution, but making a game plan to achieve this is often easier said than done. The weekly 5km run held at New Farm Park is an easy way to move a little bit more each week. The event is completely free, but you do need to register online first. Your unique barcode that you attach to yourself during your run enables you to check your time online and track your improvement each week.

When: Every Saturday, 7am
Where: New Farm Park (course details here)
Details: For info and registration, click here.

Sunday 15th January

Double Feature And Video Games

Netherworld is the arcade bar of your 90’s dreams and if you swing by this Sunday night you can enjoy a plethora of 90’s goodness, with a double feature of two classic, trashy, video game-inspired flicks; Super Mario Bros and Mortal Kombat: Annihilation. The critics reviled these films, but that’s probably because they weren’t half-watching them whilst playing classic video games and drinking beer – obviously the only way to enjoy trash films.

When: Sunday 15th, 7pm
Where: Netherworld, Fortitude Valley
Details: For info, click here.

Lululemon Free Yoga Class

If you’re searching for a bit of zen this weekend, head into Lululemon Fortitude Valley for a free yoga class first thing in the morning. Each week features a different style and instructor, so you’re encouraged to go in-store and pick up the full schedule. Matts are provided, so all you need to take is a towel and water. Stretch that hangover away and follow it up with a coffee from one of James Street's fabulous cafes.

When: Every Sunday, 8:30am–9:30am
Where: Lululemon, Fortitude Valley
Details: For info, click here.

Lion Screening Moonlight Cinema

If you’re after a low-key yet intimate date night, then you have to check out Event Cinemas' Moonlight Cinema in New Farm Park. This Sunday’s critically acclaimed feature, Lion, was the 1st Runner Up at the Toronto International Film Festival and was also nominated for four Golden Globes. That’s some pretty good film cred. Cosy up with someone special, enjoy the fully licensed bar, and settle in to enjoy Nicole Kidman in one of her best roles yet.

When: Sunday 15th, 7pm
Where: New Farm Park
Details: For info and tickets, click here.
