Whatever it is you fancy, you’re guaranteed to find something to do in Brisbane this weekend that will get you excited. With Australia Day parties, Chinese New Year celebrations, the return of MELT festival, and so much more, there’s something for everyone this weekend in Brisbane. Get amongst it!

Thursday 26th January

MELT Festival

MELT Festival has returned, bringing with it glorious and extravagant showcases celebrating our wonderfully diverse queer community. With performances that are full of humour, heart, and pride, this isn’t an event you will want to miss. Wednesday night opens the festival with a BANG with an Opening Night party and the always brilliant MELT Beauty Pageant. The festival runs until the 5th of February and there’s a whole calendar of events to check out.

Lifeline Bookfest

Today is the last day of Bookfest, which means one thing: ultra cheap books! Bookworms, students, and collectors alike flock at the chance to double their book collection, whist doing a little good for the community too.

Shank Brothers @ Wandering Cooks

Under the careful and masterful instruction of Mikey and Badger, you can learn the art of curing and smoking various styles of bacon. This is a pretty big deal, as they are going to walk you through how to prepare maple infused pork bacon, smoked duck prosciutto, and lamb bacon, all followed by a Q&A session to cover any questions you may have. Get ready to blow all your friends away at your next BBQ!

Great Australian Bites

For four days, the eateries of River Quay - Aquitaine Brasserie, Cove Bar & Dining, Popolo and The Jetty – are blessing the folks of Brisbane with a feast of Queensland classic ingredients and flavours. For platters of food, live music, pop-up stalls, and the beautiful Brisbane River, swing by River Quay Thursday through Saturday.

Friday 27th January

Cinema Paradiso Screening

Metro Arts Theatre is instating Friday Cult Movie Nights, launching with a special screening of Italian cult classic Cinema Paradiso, which tells the story of a filmmaker’s childhood and how he fell in love with the cinema. With a fully licensed bar, this would make a great date night.

Chinese New Year @ Indooroopilly Shopping Centre

Indooroopilly Shopping Centre will be entertaining patrons with traditional Chinese Lion and Dragon dances and lucky fortune cookie giveaways all weekend. Troupes of 20 entertainers will perform the incredible Dragon and Lion Dances we know and love, accompanied by live Chinese music for a culturally traditional experience.

Saturday 28th January

Carafe-ternoons @ Darling & Co

Cancel your usual Saturday arvo plans and head to Darling & Co to cool down this weekend. From 3pm you can sit back, relax and watch the tennis (in air conditioning) with a jug full of Aperol as the slick Paddington venue hosts Carafe-ternoons.

PJ Harvey @ The Tivoli

Following the release of the critically acclaimed album The Hope Six Demolition Project, PJ Harvey is blessing the Australian shores with her full 10-piece band. Even if you haven't heard of PJ Harvey, I serioulsy recommend you check out this gig. Head in early for drinks and snacks before the show!

Chinese New Year @ New Shanghai

New Shanghai are toasting to the Year of the Rooster  with a special celebration menu that includes New Shanghai favourites, limited edition dishes AND a stellar selection of cocktails. To get into the spirit there will be traditional Lion Dances throughout lunch, as well as complimentary scratch cards. Hears to the Year of the Rooster!

Sunday 29th

Grease Sing-A-Long @ Moonlight Cinema

Everything you need to know is in the title! Moonlight Cinema is hosting a family-and-pooch friendly sing-a-long for beloved, classic flick, Grease. We all know the words to Summer Nights, but what about We Go Together? Thanks to the subtitles (and the fully licensed bar) you can belt out every tune of the movie without missing a beat!

Aperol Spritz Sessions @ Soleil Pool Bar

Escape the heat and go poolside at Soleil Pool Bar for Aperol Spritz Sessions this Sunday. Head to the rooftop bar and unwind the way only the Italians know how with enjoy chilled sounds from 1pm and your favourite cocktail of the summer (aka an Aperol Spritz).
